STORY 1: 18-Year Prison Sentence Handed Down in Brutal Abuse Case

Demetrise Favors, 29, faced severe charges including felony aggravated assault and criminal attempt to commit feticide after a harrowing attack on a woman involving a piece of lumber and a propane tank. The victim recounted sustained abuse and theft of her car throughout their relationship. Favors' open plea resulted in an 18-year prison sentence and 38 years on probation, handed down by Floyd County Superior Court Judge Bryan Johnson. This sentence, heralded by prosecutors for its strong stand against domestic violence in Floyd County, marks a significant judicial response to such offenses, underscoring the case's grave implications.

STORY 2: Tractor Trailer Driver Charged with Going The Wrong Way On Calhoun Highway In Fatal Wreck

Parvinder Singh, 47, of Floral Park, N.Y., is charged with vehicular homicide among other offenses following a fatal collision on Calhoun Highway, where he drove a tractor-trailer on the wrong side, resulting in a head-on crash. The incident claimed the life of 34-year-old Letha Lamb of Calhoun and seriously injured another passenger. Following the collision near Calhoun Road, Singh has been held without bond, pending an Immigration and Customs Enforcement hold. The death of Lamb was confirmed at the scene by Deputy Coroner Chris Giles.Top of Form

STORY 3: Kemp Vetoes Bill Suspending Data Centers Tax Break

Governor Brian Kemp recently exercised his veto power on several pieces of legislation passed by the General Assembly, showing a careful balance in his governance. He vetoed House Bill 1192, which sought to suspend state sales tax exemptions for data centers, citing potential impacts on current and future projects. House Bill 1019, aimed at doubling the statewide homestead tax exemption, was also vetoed due to constitutional concerns prompted by last-minute amendments. Additionally, Kemp rejected Senate Bill 368, which would have limited political contributions from foreign nationals, pointing to existing federal laws and the possibility of unintended consequences.

STORY 4: Beautiful Situations: Religious Sisters Make for an Unusual Sight in Rural Georgia

In downtown Cedartown, St. Bernadette Roman Catholic Church stands uniquely amid predominantly Protestant congregations, hosting the area's sole Catholic community and the Sisters Poor of Jesus Christ. Their unexpected arrival, encouraged by Parish Pastor Timothy Gallagher, has overcome initial challenges, such as transportation and language barriers, to significantly integrate and uplift the community. They provide crucial services to the homeless and addiction sufferers, promoting unity within the multicultural parish through bilingual masses and collaborative activities. Despite curiosity around their traditional attire, their deep commitment to service illustrates a profound embodiment of a "radical way of life" within Cedartown's rural setting.

STORY 5: Kemp Signs $36.1 Billion State Budget

Governor Brian Kemp signed a historic $36.1 billion state budget, marking a significant increase of $3.7 billion from the previous year, with key investments in education, mental health, and public safety. Employees across state and universities are set to receive 4% cost-of-living raises, with special attention to roles with high turnover rates. Public school teachers will benefit from a $2,500 increase in their salaries, contributing to a total raise of $9,500 since 2019. Additionally, $108 million is allocated for security enhancements in schools and technology upgrades in prisons. Despite these expenditures, the budget allows for tax cuts, thanks to a $16 billion surplus, returning over $5 billion to taxpayers.

STORY 7: Leah McGrath

And now here is Bruce Jenkins’ conversation with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on hard boiled eggs.
