Story 1: Aetna Invests Over $510,000 to Address Food and Housing Insecurity Across Georgia

Aetna Better Health of Georgia, a CVS Health company, has invested over $510,000 in community support for 17 local organizations addressing food insecurity and homelessness in Georgia. The funds will enhance programs promoting health literacy and providing access to fresh and nutritious foods for youth, families, and individuals in need. Beneficiary organizations include Sweetwater Mission Inc. in Austell, the YMCA of Metropolitan Atlanta Inc., and The Salvation Army in Marietta. This initiative aligns with Aetna's commitment to supporting communities and addressing critical social determinants of health.

Story 2: State Senate committee approves new Georgia congressional map

A Republican-led legislative committee in Georgia approved a new congressional map, despite objections that it does not comply with a federal court order regarding the Voting Rights Act. The proposed map, approved along party lines, would create an additional Black-majority district, as ordered by U.S. District Judge Steve Jones. However, critics argue that the Republicans eliminated a minority-opportunity district, contrary to the court order. The proposed map includes significant changes to Congressional District 6, affecting Fulton, Cobb, Douglas, and Fayette counties. Critics claim the map targets Democratic Representative Lucy McBath in a partisan effort to maintain the GOP's congressional delegation majority. The map is set to reach the Senate floor for a vote.

Story 3: Gov. Brian Kemp wants to accelerate state income tax cuts

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp announced plans to seek additional tax relief by expediting a state income tax cut during the upcoming legislative session. The proposed amendment to House Bill 1437, passed in 2022, aims to accelerate the reduction of the state's income tax rate from 5.75% to 4.99%, bringing it to 5.39% in tax year 2024 instead of the previously set 5.49%. The accelerated tax cuts are estimated to save taxpayers $1.1 billion in the upcoming tax year. Governor Kemp emphasized this as part of Georgia's commitment to fiscal responsibility and reducing tax burdens for its residents.

Story 4: Georgia Taking First Step Toward Building Hydrogen Fueling Station

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is seeking a developer to build a publicly accessible hydrogen fueling station in Southeast Georgia, specifically for commercial fleet vehicles. GDOT plans to release a Request for Proposals in the first quarter of next year to invite bids from developers for the project. The hydrogen fueling station aims to support alternative fuels for transportation, particularly for commercial vehicles. The proposed scope of work includes designing, permitting, site development, construction, operation, and maintenance of both temporary and permanent fueling stations. The project is set to qualify for federal funding through a public-private partnership contract.

Story 5: Area Gas Prices Climb as Tax Break Ends

Gas prices in Georgia rose after the state's gas tax suspension ended last week. Many stations were priced at $3.19 per gallon over the weekend, with a few advertising as low as $2.99. The cheapest price found on a trip from Rome to Summerville was $2.99 at a 76 station. Area prices as of Sunday afternoon ranged from $2.92 in Chattooga to $3.13 in Bartow. Governor Brian Kemp had suspended the gas tax, typically 31 cents per gallon, to provide relief to consumers. The state average is now 27 cents higher than a week ago, costing an average of $45.90 to fill a 15-gallon tank.

Story 6: Braves acquire Kelenic in five-player trade with Mariners

The Atlanta Braves initiated the Major League Baseball Winter Meetings with a significant five-player trade with the Seattle Mariners. In a deal to address the Braves' left field vacancy, Jarred Kelenic, a former top prospect, was the key player acquired. The trade also involved Marco Gonzales, Evan White, and cash considerations going to Atlanta, while the Mariners received pitchers Jackson Kowar and Cole Phillips. Kelenic, who debuted with the Mariners in 2021, struggled initially but showed promise in the 2023 season. The Braves now aim to unlock Kelenic's potential, providing him with a supportive environment. The team also expressed confidence in its deep lineup and indicated that the search for a left fielder may be concluded with Kelenic's addition.

Story 7: Federal prisoner charged with escape enters not guilty plea

Johnifer Dernard Barnwell, a recently convicted felon, has pleaded not guilty to charges of escaping the Bibb County Jail in October. Barnwell faces one count of escape from custody, while co-defendant Janecia Green is charged with aiding and abetting the escape and assisting the escape of a person committed to custody. The charges carry a maximum sentence of five years in prison. Barnwell, convicted on drug-related charges, remains in federal custody. The escape allegedly occurred while Barnwell was being held in the Bibb County Jail on behalf of the U.S. Marshals Service after his federal conviction.
