STORY 1:  Air Quality Monitoring Continues in Rockdale County

State and federal agencies, including the Georgia EPD and EPA, are monitoring air quality following the BioLab fire. Overnight monitoring detected chlorine levels above action thresholds, but efforts to neutralize the chemical are ongoing. The TAGA mobile lab is being used for real-time air quality monitoring. Weather changes may cause smoke and chlorine odors to settle in metro Atlanta, especially in the mornings. Residents are advised to limit outdoor activities, keep indoor air clean, and follow health precautions, especially if they have respiratory conditions. Chlorine levels are currently safe, but symptoms should be reported to health providers or the Georgia Poison Center.

STORY 2:     GA Court of Appeals Rules in Favor of State in Rivian Zoning Lawsuit

The Georgia Court of Appeals ruled in favor of the State of Georgia in a lawsuit challenging the Rivian project, dismissing the case on procedural grounds rather than addressing zoning complaints. The court determined the lawsuit was a public lawsuit, and only one such lawsuit can be filed per project. The No2Rivian group, opposing the $5 billion Rivian EV plant, expressed disappointment as the zoning issues remain unresolved. The Georgia Department of Economic Development and the Joint Development Authority celebrated the ruling, emphasizing the prevention of further lawsuits. No2Rivian is consulting with legal advisors to explore future actions.

STORY 3:  District Cleanup Events Set for October in Newton County

Keep Newton Beautiful (KNB) and Newton County commissioners are organizing District Cleanups in October, seeking volunteers to help remove roadside litter. The first event is on October 12 at Alcovy High School, followed by another on October 26 at Spring Hill Park. Volunteers will receive breakfast, supplies, and t-shirts before cleaning up local areas. KNB emphasizes the importance of litter prevention and community involvement, encouraging participation from individuals, families, and groups. Children under 12 must be supervised, and all participants must sign a release form. KNB also offers educational programs to promote a litter-free community.

STORY 4:  Meth and Heroin Bust at Madison’s Historic Carter-Newton House

The historic Carter-Newton-Glover House in Madison, built in 1840, became the site of a drug bust when police discovered suspected methamphetamines and heroin. The homeowner, James "Jim" Glover, 61, and three other men were arrested. The incident began with a 911 hang-up call, leading officers to the house where they found drugs in plain sight. Glover, who bought the home in 2021 to renovate it, returned during the police visit and claimed the men had permission to be there. All four denied knowledge of the drugs. This isn't the first drug-related issue at the house, which has a history of such incidents. Glover was released on bail, and all face future court dates.

STORY 5:   Newton Schools Superintendent Emphasizes Safety as #1 Objective

At a recent Safe Schools Forum, Newton County School System Superintendent Dr. Duke Bradley II emphasized that student and staff safety is the top priority, essential for achieving the district's goal of becoming the fastest improving in the state. Over the past three years, $24 million has been invested in safety measures, including controlled-access vestibules, classroom alarm systems, and school resource officers. Communication remains the primary defense strategy, with the "See something; say something" approach. The Board of Education is considering weapons detection systems, but logistical challenges exist. The district also focuses on mental health support and proactive measures to enhance overall safety.
