STORY 1: Powder Springs Woman Accused of Assault with Scissors

A Powder Springs woman, Cheyenne Evans, 18, has been accused of assaulting a man with scissors during a physical dispute on December 25 at an apartment in Austell. The incident resulted in the victim sustaining a deep laceration on the bottom of his palm, tearing of dreadlocks, and a bite on the inside of his left leg. Evans faces charges of aggravated assault with a weapon and battery causing visible harm. She was arrested on the same day and later released on a $10,000 bond.

STORY 2: Marietta Man Accused of Child Molestation

Warren Kol Davidson, a 26-year-old Marietta man, is facing charges of child molestation, aggravated child molestation, cruelty to children (first degree), and aggravated sodomy. He is accused of performing a sex act 6-20 times on a juvenile female between June 27, 2020, and Aug. 1, 2020, at an apartment in Marietta. The victim disclosed the incidents in a forensic interview on Dec. 21, 2021. Davidson was arrested on Jan. 3, 2024, and is currently in custody without bond at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center.

STORY 3: Marietta Attorney Pearlberg Dies

Marietta attorney and civic leader Van Perlberg passed away overnight Saturday. A former deputy attorney general, he served as the head of the Georgia Medicaid Fraud Division until his retirement last year. With 25 years in the Cobb District Attorney's Office, including deputy chief assistant district attorney, Perlberg was also a Marietta City Council member from 2006-2012. He graduated from Long Island University in 1973 and earned his law degree from John Marshall Law School in 1976. A feature obituary highlighting Perlberg's contributions to the Cobb and Georgia communities will be published by the Marietta Daily Journal.

STORY 4: World War II Veteran Reflects Ahead of 100th Birthday

John William "Bill" Schmidt, a World War II veteran, is set to celebrate his 100th birthday on February 18. Drafted at 18, Schmidt served for 39 months in the U.S. Army, playing a crucial role in the European Theatre. He swept Normandy Beach shortly after D-Day, collecting fallen soldiers. Schmidt will be one of the 119,000 remaining World War II veterans, less than 1% of the 16.1 million Americans who served. Despite facing personal tragedies, such as the loss of his wife and grandson, Schmidt is known for his kindness and generosity, leaving a lasting impact on his community.

STORY 5: 10 Cobb Schools Students Spell Their Way To Regional Bee

Cobb County Schools in Georgia have selected 10 finalists from their recent spelling bee at Kell High School to advance to the regional spelling bee at Etowah High School in Woodstock. The competition featured 82 elementary- and middle-school students from across the Cobb district, with each having won school-level spelling bees to qualify. The county bee is the second-largest in Georgia. The 10 finalists will compete against students from 12 other northwest Georgia counties, with the winners moving on to the state spelling bee on March 15 at Georgia State University and then to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington.

STORY 6: 2024 Women of Achievement Honorees Announced

LiveSafe Resources in Marietta has revealed the honorees for its 39th Tribute to Women of Achievement. The organization annually recognizes 15 women leaders who display outstanding leadership in their personal, professional, and volunteer endeavors. The honorees are chosen through a competitive application process, and one of them will be named "2024 Woman of the Year" at the awards gala on March 22. This year's honorees include individuals from various sectors, including business, nonprofit, and government. The gala aims to celebrate and recognize these women for their contributions to the community.

 

STORY 7: Belgian Waffles Arrive In Cobb

Press Waffle Co. has opened its new restaurant at Avenue East Cobb, introducing Cobb County diners to liege waffles. The restaurant, owned by Niki and Keith Ginel, features a unique kind of waffle called liege waffles, which are made from a brioche-based dough with yeast that rises overnight. The waffles include Belgian pearl sugar, which caramelizes when cooked. The couple, inspired by their European travels, partnered with Press Waffles to bring this culinary experience to East Cobb. Press Waffle Co. has locations in several states, and the East Cobb restaurant offers liege waffles for breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner, and dessert.
