STORY 1: Man shot in both legs in Walmart parking lot
In Covington, Georgia, a man, Christopher Joseph Scott, was shot in both legs after an altercation with a woman and her son at a Walmart on Salem Road. The woman was involved in an altercation with Scott inside the store, after which Scott left. In the parking lot, the woman's son, identified as David Ruffin Jr., confronted Scott and allegedly shot him in each leg during the altercation. A responding deputy provided aid to Scott until medical assistance arrived. Ruffin was detained and taken to jail. Scott has been released from the hospital, and warrants for simple battery have been issued against him.
STORY 2: County passes qualifying fees for upcoming 2024 local elections
Morgan County, Georgia, is gearing up for local elections in 2024, with open races for commissioner seats in Districts 3, 4, and 5, Board of Education seats in Districts 1, 2, and 3, Sheriff, Tax Commissioner, Probate Judge, Magistrate Court Judge, Clerk of Superior Court, and Coroner. The retiring Sheriff, Robert Markley, has sparked interest, with several candidates vying for the position. County Commissioners Ben Riden, Philipp von Hanstein, and Bill Kurtz, along with Board of Education Members Cheryl Bland, Joe Slaughter, and Brad Hawk, are up for reelection. Qualifying fees range from $113 to $2,123, calculated as 3% of the base salary for each position.
STORY 3: Rockdale County Development Authority Board Offers 'Wheels of Progress' to Community Youths
The Development Authority of Rockdale County, led by Chairman Dr. Stephen Boyle, organized a heartwarming bike giveaway for local primary school students in Conyers. This inaugural event aimed to bring joy and symbolize the authority's commitment to a vibrant community. Bikes were donated to children at Peeks Chapel Elementary, Hightower Trail Elementary, and Sims Elementary. The initiative aligns with the authority's vision of fostering economic development through collaboration, innovation, and workforce development. The program, viewed as a turning point, represents the authority's commitment to future community-focused initiatives in Rockdale County in 2024.

STORY 4: Morgan County Commissioners elect new chairman and vice chairman
The Morgan County Board of Commissioners elected Commissioner Bill Kurtz as the 2024 Chairman and Commissioner Blake McCormack as the Vice Chairman. Kurtz, representing District 5, is a retired banker with extensive experience on local boards. He emphasizes orderly growth, quality development, and fiscal responsibility for Morgan County. McCormack, who joined the BOC in 2023, aims to bring transparency and awareness to county affairs. He advocates for town halls to address citizens' concerns and ensure open communication.
