Brad Thomas and Richard Weatherby Discuss Cherokee's Senior Tax Exemption Cap

State Rep. Brad Thomas and Cherokee County Commissioner Richard Weatherby conducted a town hall meeting in Hickory Flat, addressing concerns about rising home values and property taxes. Cherokee County's real property digest increased by 21.81%, with 15.01% attributed to inflation and 6.8% to growth. Thomas is working to potentially eliminate the $485,500 cap on the senior school tax exemption, allowing seniors to avoid taxes on unrealized gains. However, this could result in a $14 million shortfall for the school district. A residency requirement for new seniors moving into the county is being considered. Road and intersection improvements were also discussed, with efforts to maintain a rural atmosphere in the area.
