Georgia Governor Brian Kemp has suspended the state sales tax on gasoline and other motor fuels for the second time in a year and a half due to increasing gas prices. The suspension will be in effect from 12 a.m. on October 12th and will run until 11:59 p.m. on October 12th. Kemp attributed the rising gas prices to the policies of the Biden administration. Gasoline prices in Georgia have risen over the summer, with the average cost of a gallon of regular gas at $3.57, up from $3.24 a year ago. This suspension will save Georgians 31.2 cents per gallon on gasoline and 35 cents per gallon on diesel fuel..
A 25-year-old man, Lamar Shuler, was fatally shot on August 29 in Newton County, with authorities suspecting the incident to be drug-related. The shooting occurred as Shuler was inside a car on Oak Terrace Drive, where he was found unconscious with multiple gunshot wounds. A deputy responded to the scene and attempted CPR until medical personnel arrived. Unfortunately, Shuler succumbed to his injuries at a nearby hospital. The investigation, conducted by the Newton County Sheriff's Office, is currently active and ongoing..
. Derrick Reid has officially announced his candidacy for Morgan County Sheriff, emphasizing his lifelong commitment to the community and his 14 years of law enforcement experience. He plans to prioritize community engagement, accountability, crime prevention, mental health support, and professional development within the Sheriff's Office. Reid's campaign aims to create a safer and more connected community.
Additionally, a group art exhibition titled "Melange" is set to open in mid-September at MAGallery in Madison/Morgan County. Featuring the works of Jodie Hutchens, Deb Rosenbury, and Shanon Schneider, the exhibition offers a contemporary mix of abstract, figurative, and floral art in various mediums. An opening reception on Sept. 22 will provide an opportunity to meet the artists, enjoy refreshments, and explore the artwork, which will be available for purchase until Oct. 21.......……we’ll be right back…

Rockdale County, Georgia, is addressing its homelessness issue by forming a joint task force involving city and county officials along with the school district. Chairman Oz Nesbitt Sr. announced this collaboration to tackle the growing homeless population, aligning with the national housing crisis. The Joint Conyers—Rockdale Homeless Task Force will consist of 15 members, representing categories such as public safety, education, mental health, and local clergy with non-profit and social services experience. Over the next six to nine months, the task force will study existing successful models and develop a tailored plan for Rockdale County's homeless population. Regular meetings are set to begin in early 2024, emphasizing community-focused initiatives to address homelessness effectively.
Shaquell Fisher, aged 26 at the time, has been convicted of murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during a felony for fatally shooting his 25-year-old brother, Deondre Fisher, following a Fourth of July celebration in 2021. The incident occurred after the two brothers got into a physical altercation upon returning home from a party. Shaquell Fisher initially shot his brother nine times with a .22 caliber handgun and then, after retrieving a 9mm handgun, shot him an additional four times. Witnesses called 911 for help. The case was prosecuted by the Newton County District Attorney's Office, and Shaquell Fisher will be sentenced following a pre-sentencing investigation. The tragic incident underscores the consequences of resorting to gun violence in moments of anger or conflict.

The Morgan County Sheriff's Office is hosting a car seat safety check on September 21st as part of Child Passenger Safety Awareness Week, running from September 17th to September 23rd. The event will take place in the parking lot of the Morgan County Aquatic Center in Madison. Certified child passenger safety technicians will be available to check and demonstrate proper car seat installation. They will also provide a limited number of car seats to families in need. Families are encouraged to bring their expired or damaged car seats for free replacements while supplies last. It's recommended that families bring their children to determine appropriate seat configurations, and appointments are encouraged, with contact details available at 706-342-1507.
Local and state officials, along with community members, gathered at Rockdale Assembly Hall to commemorate 9/11 and pay tribute to local first responders. The event, organized by state Rep Rhonda Taylor, featured resolutions honoring the brave first responders who selflessly serve the community, often risking their health and lives. The ceremony also included prayers and a release of red, white, and blue balloons in memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice while on duty. In Georgia, September 11 is recognized as First Responders Appreciation Day, highlighting the importance of honoring and supporting those who protect and serve the community.
