In an update, The Canton City Council has unanimously adopted a Down Payment Assistance program to aid qualified buyers in purchasing a home. The program offers forgivable deferred payment loans ranging from a minimum of $500 to a maximum of $10,000. For the year 2023, the council has allocated up to $100,000 for 10 approved applications. To qualify, applicants must meet certain criteria, including being first-time homebuyers, having a total annual income below 80% of the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell median income, and meeting federal regulations. The loan will be forgiven over a five-year period, with the amount decreasing by 20% each year. Certain groups, such as first responders, educators, healthcare workers, households with disabled family members, and city employees, may be eligible for higher loan amounts. The property must be a single-family residence within Canton city limits and comply with relevant housing and building codes..….get more info at tribuneledgernews.com
STORY 2: donations
A family is seeking donations after a motorcycle accident in Cherokee County resulted in the loss of a father and soon-to-be husband. Tyler Letson, 24, was tragically killed when a car pulled out in front of his motorcycle on Highway 92. Letson, also known as Cole Letson, had plans to marry his fiancee, Haley Brookshire, in November, and they have two young daughters. To support Brookshire and the children, a GoFundMe campaign has been created by Brookshire's sister, Amber Johnson. The funds raised will be used for the girls' necessities, education, and future. Funeral services for Letson are scheduled for June 3. For more info on how to donate, visit tribuneledgernews.com
Story 3: C.O.N.
The Georgia state Senate has been actively involved in efforts to reform or repeal the state's certificate of need law (CON), which governs hospitals and healthcare services. A newly formed Senate study committee consisting of senators, healthcare executives, and an insurance industry representative will begin meeting in June to explore options for reforming the law. The CON law requires applicants to demonstrate the need for new medical facilities or services to the state Department of Community Health. The push for CON reform or repeal came through two bills introduced by Senate Republicans, but neither bill passed the House. A House study committee on CON is also expected to convene in the coming months.

STORY 4: top end
The board of Atlanta's regional transit agency has approved a contract with engineering consultant CDM Smith to design the addition of mass transit to the Top End of Interstate 285. The project aims to incorporate high-capacity bus-rapid transit (BRT) service into the expansion of I-285, which will include toll lanes in both directions along 35 miles of the highway. The planning and design contract, worth $6.7 million, was put together by a consortium of counties, cities, transit authorities, and transportation departments. The consultant's work will involve identifying BRT station locations, designing stations, assessing environmental impact, estimating costs, and analyzing potential funding sources. The contract will run for two years with extension options.
Story 5: lacrosse
Cam Autry from Woodstock High School and Ryder Neuhoff from Etowah High School have been named the 2023 Cherokee County Co-Players of the Year for lacrosse. Autry, a senior, played a key role in Woodstock's defense, demonstrating exceptional skills and leadership. Neuhoff, on the other hand, dedicated his performance to honoring his late father and led Etowah to their best record in years. Neuhoff was a standout offensive player for the team, contributing significantly to their success. Both players exhibited remarkable talent and contributed to their teams' achievements during the season.
Story 6: C.O.Y.
Etowah High School's boys lacrosse team faced uncertainty before the 2023 season, with projected starters not returning and a disappointing end to the previous year. However, they quickly turned things around, winning nine consecutive games after a 2-2 start. Led by coach Michael Cintineo, the Eagles finished the season with a 15-4 record, claiming the Area 4-5A/6A championship and securing a playoff berth. Cintineo's impressive coaching efforts earned him the title of 2023 Cherokee County Coach of the Year. Despite challenges, the team displayed resilience, adaptability, and a strong team spirit. The focus on player psychology and understanding their responses both on and off the field contributed to their success.
