STORY 1: Canton leaders OK planning proposal for potential Lake Canton Resort

Canton City Council has accepted a proposed "Lake Canton Resort" strategic planning proposal, aiming to create a resort-style facility near the Hickory Log Creek Reservoir. A feasibility study found that the market could support a resort-style facility, leading to potential hotel and conference development in the area. The city has partnered with Horwath HTL for this initiative. Initial costs for strategic planning are estimated at around $15,000, with the company seeking potential hotel brands, comparing offers, and guiding negotiations for development. The next phase involves marketing the site to lodging brands and preparing a formal proposal process.......……Read more on this story at tribuneledgernews.com

STORY 2: Carmel Elementary School named a State Distinguished School

Carmel Elementary School in Georgia has been recognized as a 2023 Distinguished School, placing it in the top 5% of high-performing Title I schools across the state. This recognition is based on students' achievements in English language arts and math on the Georgia Milestones test. Title I schools cater to communities with higher proportions of students receiving free or reduced-price meals due to family income levels. Cherokee County School District Superintendent Brian Hightower praised the dedication of Carmel's teachers and staff, led by Principal Kim Hagood, in improving student learning. Carmel is now eligible for the National ESEA Distinguished Schools award.

STORY 3: Canton leaders approve plans to use additional revenue from occupation taxes

The Canton City Council has approved amendments to the fiscal year 2023 budget to account for additional revenue from occupation taxes. The council held a public hearing to discuss how the additional revenue would be used. The revenue from business occupation taxes was higher than expected, with collections totaling approximately $1,595,000. The extra revenue will be used to cover various expenses, including inflationary cost increases in insurance, repairs and maintenance, and more. The council voted 4-1 to approve the budget amendments, with one council member suggesting further discussion at a later date. The city is also considering potential amendments to its development code and short-term rental regulations.

STORY 4: Hickory Flat Public Library renovations on track to be finished in spring 2024

The renovation and expansion of the Hickory Flat Public Library are progressing as planned, with a scheduled completion date in mid- to late spring 2024. The project includes expanding the existing library building by 7,800 square feet, enhancing spaces for youth, programming, and collaboration, and creating dedicated areas for children and teenagers. The renovations aim to meet the community's needs for additional study and collaboration spaces. The project is funded by Cherokee County's Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax and a capital outlay grant from the Georgia Public Library Service. The library is closed during construction, with services available at neighboring libraries.

STORY 5: City of Canton launches sustainability and historic preservation project

The city of Canton is launching a sustainability and historic preservation program in partnership with Schneider Electric. The program aims to enhance the city's sustainability efforts by making its facilities more energy-efficient, adding solar energy to the renewable energy portfolio, and achieving certification for the Atlanta Regional Commission Green Communities Program. It will also address infrastructure needs in two historic buildings while preserving their historic integrity. Schneider Electric conducted a comprehensive analysis of the city's energy usage and proposed various solutions, including solar installations, HVAC system renovations, and building automation systems. The program is expected to reduce utility and operational costs by 28%, generating $2 million in lifecycle savings. Construction will begin this summer, with completion expected in early 2025.
