A Canton man has been charged with second-degree vehicular homicide following a fatal crash on September 1, 2023. The incident occurred at the intersection of Hickory Flat Highway and Interstate 575 northbound on-ramp. A Ford truck and a Jeep Wrangler were involved, sustaining extensive damage. Two occupants of the Jeep Wrangler were trapped and had to be rescued. Walter Gaspar, the Jeep's driver, and Alejandro Ramirez, the front passenger, suffered serious injuries, while Juan Lorenzo, the rear passenger, suffered life-threatening injuries and later succumbed to them. Castro Xquin, the Ford truck driver, and three other occupants sustained minor injuries. The investigation revealed that the Jeep Wrangler failed to yield while turning, resulting in the collision. STORY 2: 9/11 Memorial

Multiple events in Cherokee County are planned to commemorate the 22nd anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The Patriot Day observance at The Mill on Etowah on September 8 will honor the firefighters who lost their lives during the attacks. There's also an annual stair climb at Truist Park on September 9 to remember firefighters who climbed the Twin Towers, with proceeds benefiting Georgia firefighters and their families. On September 11, Cherokee County will host its annual Patriot Day ceremony at Canton Rotary Park at 8:30 a.m. The event will pay tribute to 9/11 victims, with Chief Eddie Robinson of Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services as the keynote speaker. The program includes music performances, color presentations, and a wreath presentation, and it will be live-streamed on Facebook. Additionally, the city of Woodstock will hold a 9/11 Day of Remembrance ceremony at the Park at City Center on September 11 at 7 p.m., honoring victims, first responders, and military members. The event includes the distribution of 9/11 remembrance lapel pins.

Story 3: Teacher sentenced for porn

A Calhoun man and his wife, a former Cherokee County teacher, have been sentenced to federal prison for child pornography charges. William Sandridge received a sentence of seven years and three months, followed by a lifetime of supervised release, for distributing explicit images of minors. Allyn Michelle Sandridge was sentenced to one year and six months in prison, followed by a lifetime of supervised release, for possessing explicit images of minors and misprision of a felony.

William Sandridge sent his wife explicit text messages involving prepubescent children, some with explicit images. Allyn, a former middle school special education teacher, cooperated with the investigation after authorities executed a search warrant at their home and found graphic child pornography on their devices. The case was investigated by multiple agencies, including Homeland Security Investigations, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, and the Calhoun Police Department. U.S. Attorney Ryan K. Buchanan emphasized the importance of protecting children from exploitation, especially when individuals in positions of trust are involved.

Conrad Clark left a loaded firearm accessible to the child, as stated in his arrest warrant. He is currently in custody at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center without bond. The Cherokee County school board has decided to enlist the Georgia School Boards Association (GSBA) to assist in their search for a new superintendent. The board voted 6-0 to enter into a contract with GSBA, with one member absent due to a family illness. The base price for GSBA's superintendent search service for districts like CCSD is $15,000, and the search is expected to take between 4 to 8 months. They are seeking a new leader for the Cherokee County School District as Superintendent Brian Hightower is retiring from his public education career, with his last day set for May 31. Hightower has been serving as superintendent since 2016.

Story 7: Canton Rotary donates to Hasty Elementary food pantry

The Rotary Club of Canton recently made a significant contribution to Hasty Elementary School Fine Arts Academy by stocking its food pantry with donations for students facing economic hardships.
