STORY 1:   Carr Seeks To Leverage Assets To Address Opioid Crisis

In Georgia, opioid-related overdose deaths surged by over 308% from 2019 to 2022, largely due to fentanyl's proliferation. The state’s response includes forming a statewide Opioid Task Force to improve communication and integrate public, private, and nonprofit efforts. The task force emphasizes expanding treatment access, removing stigmas, and increasing naloxone availability. Additionally, targeted enforcement aims to curb fentanyl trafficking, with federal and state funding supporting treatment and recovery programs. This comprehensive approach reflects a shift from punitive measures to a focus on prevention and recovery.

STORY 2: HAC Hosts Exhibit Honoring Cherokee Creators

The Calhoun Harris Arts Center is showcasing the "Honoring Cherokee Creators" exhibit through September 6. Curated by Dr. Alice Taylor-Colbert, an expert in Cherokee studies, the exhibit features a diverse collection of Cherokee art, including paintings, carvings, textiles, and ceramics. Dr. Taylor-Colbert, whose Cherokee heritage inspired her work, has spent decades collecting these pieces. The exhibit highlights stories such as the Cherokee "Story of the First Fire" and includes works by notable artists like Amanda Swimmer and Charles Bird King. The gallery is open Monday-Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and admission is free.

STORY 3: Five Catoosa County Schools Qualify for the Community Eligibility Provision

For the 2024-2025 school year, five Catoosa County Public Schools—Cloud Springs Elementary, Tiger Creek Elementary, West Side Elementary, Lakeview Middle, and Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe High—will offer free breakfast and lunch to all students through the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP). This USDA-funded program eliminates the need for meal application forms for these schools. However, families with children at non-CEP schools must still complete meal applications to receive free or reduced-priced meals. More details can be found on the Catoosa County Public Schools Child Nutrition page.
