STORY 1: Cases Involving North Rome Killing, Alabama Murders Likely To Be Resolved in 2024
The trial date has been set for four men accused of the 2022 shooting death of Derricus Smith in North Rome. Justin Antonio Glynn faces a malice murder charge, while Marquivias Shabron Nicholson, Corey Lashun Chatman Jr., and Malachai Alexander Williams face felony murder charges. The shooting occurred in May 2022, and the trial is scheduled for May 6, 2024. The four men were arrested after a series of crimes involving robbery, guns, and drugs. In other cases, mental evaluations are pending for Brandon Christopher Risner, accused of a brutal murder, and Robert Keith Tincher III, accused of killing his grandmother and storing her body in a freezer. The trial for Devin Lashawn Watts, charged with the killing of two Rome sisters in 2020, is likely to take place in spring 2024.
STORY 2: Buchanan Woman Charged With Attacking Pregnant Woman
Rebecca M. Heitt, a 53-year-old Buchanan woman, was arrested for felony battery against a pregnant female. The incident occurred on Reece Street during a verbal altercation, where Heitt allegedly purposefully kicked a pregnant woman three times. She was taken into custody and remained in the Floyd County Jail on $1,300 bond. The charge is related to the assault on the pregnant woman during the altercation.
STORY 3: High Speed Chase Saturday Ends in Gordon County
A high-speed chase originating in Cartersville, Georgia, ended in Gordon County after a Cartersville Police Department officer attempted to stop a vehicle suspected of passing counterfeit $100 bills. The pursuit reached speeds over 130 miles per hour on Interstate 75, with Georgia State Patrol troopers taking over after the CPD officer lost visual contact. A Pursuit Immobilization Technique (PIT maneuver) was successfully employed by a trooper in Gordon County, ending the chase without injuries. Upon arrest, it was discovered that the driver, Lyndell Earlee Wafford, 29, of Chicago, was under the influence of drugs. Wafford faces various charges, including first-degree cruelty to children, reckless driving, and DUI. A six-year-old girl, a passenger in the vehicle, was unharmed and turned over to a family member.

STORY 4: City Prepares For New Era of Peek Park Playground
Cedartown city officials are actively seeking support and fundraising for the upcoming construction of an $800,000 playground at Peek Park. The current playground, built 25 years ago, is slated for demolition, and the new project is expected to commence on March 20. Fundraising efforts have gathered nearly $500,000, with initiatives including personalized fence pickets and bricks available for purchase on PlayatPeek.org. The city encourages donations, volunteer participation, and picket or brick purchases by the January 10 deadline. The new playground will feature a zip line, ADA-accessible merry-go-round, rubberized surfacing, playhouses resembling downtown Cedartown architecture, a Big Spring bridge replica, and more.
STORY 5: State Income Tax Cut to Take Effect Jan. 1
Starting on New Year's Day, a phased-in $1 billion tax cut passed by the Republican-controlled General Assembly in Georgia will take effect. The state income tax rate for 2024 will be set at a flat 5.49%, down from the current 5.75%, with annual reductions leading to 4.99% in 2029. Governor Brian Kemp plans to propose accelerating the reductions by one year, setting the 2024 tax rate at 5.39%. Proponents argue that broad-based tax cuts are more effective at job creation, while critics contend that the legislation may raise taxes on some low-income taxpayers. The 2024 legislative session begins on January 8.
