STORY 6: Bird Flu Has Spread to Dairy Cows

Avian influenza, previously affecting poultry, has now spread to dairy cows in nine states, but not in Georgia. The H5N1 strain of bird flu has affected 40 dairy herds since March, with a mild manifestation in cows. However, it can be transmitted through raw milk. Despite the low risk to the general public, the State Department of Public Health is monitoring both dairy and poultry farmworkers in Georgia for the virus. While avian influenza outbreaks occurred in Georgia two years ago, there were no human cases reported among the 117 people exposed.

STORY 7: "The Keeper" Film Gets Early Showing at The GEM

The GEM Theatre in Calhoun hosted an advanced screening of "The Keeper," a film based on the true story of George Eshleman and his Appalachian Trail journey, highlighting veteran suicide. Directed by Angus Benfield and Kendall Bryant Jr., the film aims to raise awareness about mental health issues among veterans. Eshleman, deeply involved in the production, expressed gratitude for the project's impact. The film prioritized accuracy, utilizing real locations and military expertise. Both Eshleman and Benfield hope the film encourages dialogue about veterans' struggles. The local screening was well-received, and the film will be released nationwide on Memorial Day Weekend.
