Show Notes

The Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce recently announced that Lori Flink, with Allegro Business Products, has been named the Chairman's Council "Volunteer of the Quarter" for first quarter 2023.

Flink was honored during the chamber's March Good Morning Cherokee breakfast networking event.

Members of the Chairman’s Council are accepted by invitation only from the Chamber's Board Chair. The Chairman’s Council members are invited to attend ribbon cuttings, ground breakings and coffee and connections for new members, and special invitation chamber meetings that aren’t open to the general membership.

In determining the "Volunteer of the Quarter," attendance at chamber events is evaluated for all members of the Chairman's Council.

"There was no doubt when naming this quarter's honoree as Lori has attended many chamber events since the first of the year," said Trey Ragsdale, external affairs, Kaiser Permanente and 2023 chamber board chair.

Cherokee made it two county teams in the final four with its 70-66 win at Carrollton on Wednesday night. The Warriors went into a hostile environment and took care of business nearly two hours south of their home court.

Trailing by two points with two minutes to go, Braylin Giddens tied the game with a layup through traffic. Tayden Owens connected on a 3-pointer with one minute to go, giving Cherokee the lead, and Cameron Pope drained two clutch free-throws with 20 seconds left to seal the win. Dastin Hart finished as Cherokee’s leading scorer with 22 points and hauled in 12 rebounds for a double-double. Pope had 15 points, Giddens scored 11 points and Owens finished with 10 points. Lawrence Sanford added eight points off the bench.

Hart was key in his second game back from an injury suffered in the region championship game. He played well in the 73-58 win over Berkmar, but he returned to his typical dominant self on Wednesday night. Cherokee will take on Norcross on Saturday at Georgia State University, the team that knocked it out of the playoffs last season.

Ahead of Easter, Cherokee Recreation and Parks is asking for donations of pre-filled Easter baskets for local children in need.

“As part of our ‘Some Bunny Special’ program, we reach out to the community each year to ask for assistance in helping the Easter Bunny gift baskets to these local kids in need,” said Cherokee Recreation and Parks Marketing and Community Outreach Coordinator Jessica Hallman.

Requested items for the baskets include Easter-themed candy, coloring books, crayons, colored pencils, socks, puzzles, stuffed animals, toy Easter eggs and Easter-themed books for children ages 1 through 12. Donations of handmade or purchased baskets are welcome, and pre-filled baskets may be wrapped in clear plastic.

Cherokee Recreation and Parks will accept the baskets starting Wednesday through April 7. Baskets can be dropped off at the Cherokee Recreation and Parks South Annex location at 7545 Main St., building 200 in Woodstock, the Cherokee County Aquatic Center, 1200 Wellstar Way near Holly Springs and the L.B. “Buzz” Ahrens Recreation Center, 7345 Cumming Highway near Canton.

Baskets can be dropped off between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. All candy must be sealed in its original packaging and baskets are to be pre-filled before drop-off.

A brewery with office, retail and restaurant space could be on the way to Highway 20 near Old Mill Road in east Cherokee County.

About three miles east of there, a business is seeking to open a special event venue.

Both proposed developments will require approval by Cherokee County officials. The county's planning commission is scheduled to hold public hearings on zoning applications for the two projects Tuesday.

Freedom 20 Brewery, LLC is applying to rezone of a little over five acres at 11058 Cumming Highway, near Domino's Pizza, from estate residential to general commercial. The business is also requesting a special use permit for a brewery with office, retail and restaurant space within the area. The property currently has an older, 1,200 square foot barn, according to county documents.

In a separate application, Countryside Ventures, LLC is seeking to rezone 16.76 acres from agriculture single family residential to general commercial at 14045 Cumming Highway, near Hopewell Road. The applicant is also requesting a special use permit to build a 6,400 square feet of special event facility.

If approved by the county, the 117-seat facility would be called Countryside Ventures.

After Tuesday's public hearing, the Cherokee County Planning Commission is expected to make a recommendation on each application to elected officials. The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners will make the final decision.

Students at Carmel Elementary School recently completed a "kindness calendar" for the month of February, showing an act of kindness each day, the school announced.

Gwen Hays and Aly Edgar, both students in Joanne Emanuel’s second grade class, decided to take treats to their local fire station. Gwen make cupcakes from scratch, and Aly shared Rice Krispies treats and other snacks.
