Story 1. indicts

Monquezias Deshad Watts, a man previously charged in 2021 with allegedly molesting a child in Cherokee County, is now facing additional charges. According to a recent indictment filed on July 10, he is charged with five counts of rape, five counts of child molestation, one count of aggravated child molestation, and two counts of aggravated sexual battery. The new charges stem from allegations of raping and molesting three children, as well as sexually assaulting two adult women. The incidents reportedly occurred between 2014 and 2019. Watts was arrested on a bench warrant and remains in the Cherokee County jail without bond. His next hearing is scheduled for August 4, with a bond hearing set for August 16.

STORY 2: drowns

An Ellijay man, identified as Jackie Merrell, 54, tragically drowned in Lake Allatoona after he went swimming to reach his dog and went under. The incident occurred near the falls, prompting a response from game wardens and rescue units from Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services. The Cherokee County dive team found him in 15 feet of water. Despite being transported to Kennestone Hospital, he was pronounced deceased. This is the second drowning incident in Lake Allatoona reported by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources in recent times, with another man's body being recovered from the lake in June after falling off a boat near Victoria Harbor.

Story 3: cbd

The Holly Springs City Council has unanimously approved changes to the zoning ordinance to regulate CBD stores and smoke shops in the city. The amendments include providing a definition for CBD and/or tobacco specialty stores and requiring general commercial zoning with council approval. The new ordinance mandates that CBD and tobacco specialty stores must be at least 1,000 feet from religious institutions, day care centers, and schools, and at least 5,000 feet from similar businesses. Additionally, the council approved the annexation of nearly 10 acres of land on Stringer Road into Holly Springs for the development of Timothy B. Downing Park, and the rezone of the property from agricultural to governmental. They also approved legal documents for the townhomes in the Town Center project to govern the neighborhood's maintenance and upkeep.

STORY 4: thomas

State Rep. Brad Thomas, R-Holly Springs, received a 2023 Legislative Service Award from the Association County Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG) for his efforts in balancing property owners' rights and local governing bodies. Thomas was recognized for his work on House Bill 374 during the 2023 legislative session, which allows aggrieved property owners to de-annex from a city without unilateral veto authority from the city. The law includes safeguards for cities to object to de-annexation if it affects public health, safety, and welfare. ACCG's Deputy Director of Governmental Affairs, Todd Edwards, presented Thomas with the award during a Cherokee County Board of Commissioners meeting.

Story 5: hot dog

Cherokee County Senior Services and Stand Up For Seniors are hosting a hot dog luncheon on August 3 at the Cherokee County Senior Center in Canton. The $5 donation lunch includes a hot dog, beans, chips, drink, and dessert, available for dine-in, takeout, or reserved in advance. Proceeds will benefit Stand Up For Seniors' Last Stop Program, providing financial assistance to struggling seniors for rent, utilities, and medical costs. The program aims to prevent homelessness and help seniors stay in their homes. Stand Up For Seniors collaborates with Cherokee County Senior Services to organize fundraising events and gather support from donors and local organizations.

Story 6: russo

Former River Ridge basketball standout Jared Russo has committed to Reinhardt. The 6-foot-10 center earned Region 7 6A Player of the Year honors and led the Knights to a 24-6 overall record with a 13-1 record in region play during his senior year. He averaged 19 points, 9.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 2.0 blocks per game. Russo will join Reinhardt's team, which had a 15-13 overall record last season. Meanwhile, his former frontcourt partner, Braden Pierce, is preparing for his freshman year at Maryland after a successful post-grad basketball season at IMG Academy. Russo will add a presence in the paint for the Eagles who seek to build on their winning record last season.
