The Cherokee County Board of Education has unanimously approved the fiscal year 2024 budget, which includes a significant pay raise for teachers. The budget, recommended by Superintendent Brian Hightower, allocates a $4,500 increase in teacher salaries, with $2,000 coming from the state budget and the remainder funded locally. Despite concerns about rising property taxes, the district will maintain the current property tax rate while experiencing a 15% increase in overall local tax revenue. The budget also includes a 3% pay raise for classified staff and signing bonuses for employees. The starting salary for teachers with a bachelor's degree will be raised to $53,500 per year. Additionally, funds are allocated for additional teacher positions, facility repairs, technology upgrades, and construction projects. The district projects an enrollment of 41,635 students and plans to hire more staff in specific program areas. The full budget details can be found on the Cherokee County School District's website.
