Cherokee Residents Show Support for Homestead Option Sales Tax at Town Halls
Cherokee County residents have shown majority support for the Homestead Option Sales Tax (HOST) at town hall meetings. The county is considering three sales tax options: Local Option Sales Tax (LOST), HOST, and Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (T-SPLOST). The final decision will require voter approval.
Among 123 polled residents, 89 favored HOST. Commissioner Steve West noted the need to shift the tax burden away from seniors. He suggested that rental properties, which don't pay property tax, could contribute more through a sales tax.
The current total sales tax in Cherokee County is 6%. A new 1% sales tax could generate $63.3 million annually. Commissioners favor either HOST or T-SPLOST. HOST mandates 80% of proceeds be used to roll back property taxes on homesteaded properties.
The implementation of these taxes requires a referendum and legislative delegation approval. Further discussions will occur at the upcoming planning retreat.
