STORY 1: Cherokee Schools Graduation Rate Among Top Metro Atlanta Districts
The Cherokee County School District's Class of 2023 achieved an impressive high school graduation rate of 92.2%, just 0.1 percentage points below last year's record-high rate. The district surpassed the statewide graduation rate of 84.4%, reflecting its continued educational excellence. Cherokee County was ranked second among metro Atlanta county public school systems, following Forsyth County Schools with a rate of 95.8%. Superintendent Brian Hightower expressed gratitude to the educators and support staff who contributed to this achievement, emphasizing the district's dedication to preparing students for success and continuous improvement. Graduation rates increased in most of the district's high schools, with River Ridge High School leading at 95.3%. STORY 2: Man Shot by Officer After Fleeing Woodstock Police Into Cobb County
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into an officer-involved shooting in Woodstock. The incident occurred when Woodstock police attempted to stop a vehicle for traffic violations, leading to a pursuit. After a crash, police tried to arrest the driver, Emmanuel Millard. During the arrest, an officer discharged his weapon, injuring Millard. The shooting was captured on the officer's body camera, and the officer is now on administrative leave while the GBI conducts an independent investigation. Millard was transported to the hospital in critical condition. The Woodstock Police Department emphasizes the value of every life and will maintain transparency during the investigation.
STORY 3: Scarecrows Invade Downtown Woodstock
The Woodstock Scarecrow Invasion has returned to downtown Woodstock, featuring over 230 scarecrow displays created by various organizations, businesses, and nonprofits. The scarecrows can be seen throughout downtown Woodstock until the end of October. The public is invited to vote for their favorite scarecrows at the Woodstock Visitors Center or in participating businesses. The proceeds from this event will benefit INSeason, the design committee for IN WDSTK, to support the beautification of downtown Woodstock. Additionally, families can participate in a Scarecrow Scavenger Hunt with 10 clues to explore the displays.

STORY 4: Developer Withdraws Application for 29 Townhomes in Woodstock
Michelle Horstemeyer for The JW Collection, has withdrawn a request to build 29 townhomes in Woodstock following concerns raised by City Council members and residents regarding the lack of a master plan for the development. The request was originally tabled in July to allow the applicant time to prepare a master plan. Although a resident attended the meeting to speak about the project, the application was withdrawn, and no vote was taken. The applicant may reapply at a later time. The City Council expressed frustration over the withdrawal and emphasized the need for a master plan to provide transparency for residents.
STORY 5: Canton's Jones Building Opening Soon with Coworking Space
The Historic Jones Mercantile Building in downtown Canton is set to open soon, offering a coworking space and a restaurant. Thrive Coworking Canton will open on November 1 and provide 45 private offices for lease, along with meeting and event rooms. Thrive occupies 19,000 square feet on both the top floor and street level, with 40% of the space already leased. Palermo’s Original Pasta and Sandwiches (POPS), a New York-inspired Italian American café and market, will open in the same building in January. The restaurant will feature homemade pasta, meatballs, sandwiches, and salads, offering specialty items from the Italian market section. The owners are excited to create a neighborhood restaurant in this historic space.

STORY 7: Cherokee County DUI Court Named State Model Court
Cherokee County's DUI Court has been designated as a "model court" by the state Council of Accountability Court Judges. This recognition highlights the DUI Court's success in exceeding state standards and national best practices and acknowledges its effectiveness in reducing drunk driving recidivism rates. Cherokee County's DUI Court, in operation since 2005, offers repeat DUI offenders an alternative to incarceration by focusing on rehabilitation. Participants engage in regular check-ins with a judge, intensive treatment, counseling, and drug testing, fostering positive life changes. Graduates of DUI Courts like Cherokee County's contribute significantly to Georgia's economy, producing economic benefits of approximately $25,921 per graduate.
STORY 8: Fire Station 15 Opens in Northeast Cherokee County
Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services and local officials celebrated the opening of the new Fire Station 15 in the Mica community. This modern facility replaces the old station and includes the Mica Community Room for community use. Fire Chief Eddie Robinson expressed his gratitude to everyone involved and noted the support the fire department receives. The station was dedicated to Elmer Barrett, a former chief of the Mica Volunteer Fire Department. The new 12,342-square-foot station was constructed by Cooper and Company General Contractors and will serve the Mica community and the northeastern Cherokee area.
