185 Methodist churches, including nine located in Cobb, are suing the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church over a pause in the process allowing local churches to leave the denomination. The pause is related to the schism within the UMC over social issues such as same-sex marriage and the ordination of LGBTQ individuals. The churches are seeking the ability to disaffiliate from the denomination and retain their assets for reasons of conscience related to LGBTQ issues.
