STORY 1 dog
A police dog from the Cobb County Police Department, named K-9 Chase, tragically died in a hot car due to a malfunctioning air conditioning system. The incident occurred during active shooter training at Allatoona High School. The officers had been checking on the dogs regularly during their training session, but the air conditioning in Officer Neill's patrol vehicle malfunctioned, causing the temperature to rise rapidly. Despite attempts to save Chase's life by officers and firefighters, he succumbed to heat-related injuries. K-9 Chase was a Belgian Shepherd trained in various tasks such as narcotics detection and criminal apprehension. His body was being held at the Cobb County Animal Shelter, and a necropsy was planned at the University of Georgia....for more on this tragic story visit mdjonline.com
Story 2: dismisses
A Cobb County judge ruled that Corbin Scott Engler acted in self-defense when he was accused of murdering Katie Lambert at a gas station in Acworth in 2021. Chief Judge Gregory Poole granted Engler immunity from criminal prosecution after determining that three individuals had threatened Engler, mistakenly believing he was harming his child. Lambert climbed onto the hood of Engler's car as he drove away, but she fell and sustained fatal head injuries. The judge found that Engler had a reasonable belief that force was necessary to protect himself and his family. The charges against Engler were dismissed, and he expressed relief at the outcome.
Story 3: tryouts
The Cobb County Sheriff's Office conducted tryouts for new riders to join their mounted patrol unit. Deputies participated in the tryouts by riding Duke, a Belgian draft horse from Texas, and showcasing their skills in an obstacle course. They were also assessed on their ability to care for the horses. The mounted unit has various responsibilities, including crowd control in busy areas like Truist Park. The unit's formation aims to enhance law enforcement capabilities in diverse assignments.
Tracey Atwater, the executive director of LiveSafe Resources, a prominent organization supporting survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault based in Marietta, is set to leave on June 30 to pursue a new opportunity. Mallori Bruning, the chief administrative officer, will serve as interim executive director until a permanent replacement is found. The LiveSafe Resources Board of Directors has formed a Transition Committee to identify a suitable candidate for Atwater's position. The organization remains dedicated to its mission of serving survivors, and a staff support committee has been established to assist employees during the transition. STORY 5: young
As expected, Kathy Young has been appointed as the new member of the Smyrna City Council. The council unanimously voted to appoint her to represent Ward 7 for the remainder of 2023. Young, who works as a part-time college and career adviser at Campbell High School, was sworn in by Municipal Court Judge Phyllis Gingrey Collins. The vacancy in Ward 7 arose when Lewis Wheaton resigned due to moving out of his ward. Young expressed gratitude for Wheaton's service and highlighted his thoughtfulness in public service. She brings experience as an economic development consultant and has been involved in various community initiatives in Smyrna. Young holds degrees from Vanderbilt University and Georgia Tech
Story 6: pope
The Lowe brothers, Nathaniel and Josh, both Pope High School alums, have a history of intense competition in various sports and activities. However, they have never played against each other in a baseball game. This will change as Nathaniel's Texas Rangers face Josh's Tampa Bay Rays in a three-game series at Tropicana Field. The brothers, along with their parents and a large group of relatives and friends, are eagerly anticipating the series. They previously played together on their high school team and spent time in the minor leagues in the Tampa Bay Rays organization. However, Nathaniel was traded to the Texas Rangers, and now they will finally have the opportunity to compete against each other at the major league level..
Story 7: wrestler
Zion Rutledge, a talented athlete from Hillgrove High School, made history in his senior year as a wrestler. After winning his first state championship in the 215-pound weight class the previous year, Rutledge aimed to defend his title. Despite wrestling for only 2½ years, Rutledge's intense athleticism and leadership made him a standout on the mat. He helped Hillgrove win its first Cobb County wrestling championship and went on to successfully defend his state title, becoming a two-time champion. For his remarkable achievements, Rutledge was named the 2022-23 Boys Wrestler of the Year by the Cobb County Wrestling Association. While Rutledge will now focus on football at the collegiate level, he credits his work ethic and dedication in both sports for his success and believes it will benefit him in the future......for more stories like this, check in regularly at mdjonline.com
