Commissioners Clash Over Funding for Veterans Memorial
Two Republican members of the Cobb Board of Commissioners clashed over a proposal to allocate $1 million in county funding to the Cobb County Veterans Memorial. Commissioner JoAnn Birrell, a proponent of the memorial, requested to move the item up on the agenda, sparking an argument with Commissioner Keli Gambrill. Gambrill opposed using county funds for the project, which is part of a Special-Purpose Local-Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) initiative. She also noted uncertainty in the memorial's cost. Birrell wants to allocate her $1 million contingency to the memorial, in addition to existing SPLOST funds. The disagreement revolves around funding and land ownership, with Gambrill expressing concerns about financial planning. The commission will vote on the matter at a later meeting.
