Robinson received a 42-month sentence for conspiracy to commit bank fraud and aggravated identity theft, while Alphonse received 36 months for conspiracy to commit bank fraud, bank fraud, false representation of a Social Security number, and aggravated identity theft. STORY 2:  funds

Austin Martin Siampwizi, an Atlanta man, has been indicted on federal charges of money laundering and wire fraud in connection with funds obtained fraudulently from a COVID-19 relief program. Siampwizi is accused of laundering money from fraudulent unemployment claims filed with the Washington State Employment Security Department, using stolen personal information from over 50 individuals. He also allegedly submitted a fraudulent loan application to the U.S. Small Business Administration. The charges are a result of misusing the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, which provided pandemic-related relief. The case is being investigated by multiple federal agencies as part of the COVID-19 Fraud Enforcement Task Force.

Shanell Edie and Megan George, juniors from Newton High School, won the Nutrition and Wellness category at the 2023 National FCCLA Leadership Conference in Denver. Their project focused on health and wellness, involving personalized health plans for their own mothers. The project showcased meticulous tracking, dietary analysis, and tailored recommendations. They won first place at the Regional Competition and state competition before clinching the national victory. Edie and George praised the educational experience and meeting fellow chapter members. Their success was supported by FCCLA advisor Fleeta Jackson, Newton High School Principal Dr. Shannon Buff, and sponsors like the Covington Lions Club. Story 5: biannual

Rockdale County Chairman Oz Nesbitt Sr. is seeking recommendations for the biannual Rockin’ Women in Rockdale event. This event celebrates women who have made significant contributions to the community. Interested residents can nominate candidates through the county's website and attend the event on October 22. Nominees must be Rockdale County residents, work or own a business in the county, be at least 18 years old, and not have received the award before. Nominations require a written explanation and a brief bio of the nominee, highlighting their impact on the community. Nominations should be submitted by September 1.

STORY 6: gov’t

A proposed bill to change Rockdale County's government structure and add members to the Board of Commissioners has sparked discussions and concerns. State Rep. Rhonda Taylor hosted a town hall meeting where residents expressed uncertainties about the role of a county manager and potential redundancy if the number of commissioners increased. The bill, House Bill 741, aims to increase the number of commissioners from three to five and introduce a county manager to oversee daily operations. The chairman would no longer be elected full-time. Some representatives expressed support for expanding the Board of Commissioners but also called for careful consideration of the impact of the proposed changes on services and residents' quality of life.
