STORY 1: Age Is Just A Number: Georgia Gwinnett College Students— 75 and 19 — Become Study Partners, Friends

Emily Borrego and Carlos Delgado, with a 56-year age difference, struck up an unexpected friendship at Georgia Gwinnett College. Borrego, 19, helped Delgado, 75, with his laptop during class, sparking their bond. Despite their age gap, they study together, share laughs, and offer each other valuable perspectives. Delgado, a retired Spanish teacher, values Borrego's youthfulness, while Borrego appreciates Delgado's wisdom. They spend weekends studying at a library and plan to remain friends even after Delgado graduates. Their friendship exemplifies the enriching connections possible across generations.

STORY 2: Gwinnett Student Wins Cybersecurity Awareness Poster Contest

Mihir Pai, a student at Paul Duke STEM High School, emerged as the winner of the 2023 Cybersecurity Awareness Poster Contest in the high school category. Sponsored by the Georgia Department of Education and Georgia Leaders of Educational Technology, the contest aimed to raise awareness about cybersecurity. Pai's winning poster focused on mobile phone security. The contest received over 116 submissions from across Georgia, with judging based on various criteria including creativity, relevance, and overall presentation. Winners from different grade categories were awarded prizes and had the opportunity to meet State School Superintendent Richard Woods.

Break 2: CURIOSITY LAB BIKE RACE

STORY 4: How we ‘brainwash’ ourselves while we sleep

Neurobiologists have discovered that our brains undergo a cleansing process every night during sleep, similar to washing dishes, to rid themselves of waste accumulated during the day. This process involves coordinated brain waves propelling fluid through brain tissue to remove debris. The findings, based on studying sleeping mice, suggest new strategies for tackling diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, which involve the buildup of waste in the brain. Enhancing this brain cleansing process could potentially allow people to sleep less while maintaining health, benefiting those with insomnia. Understanding this process better could lead to therapies to prevent or delay neurodegenerative diseases by improving waste removal from the brain. The brain's cleaning method may vary depending on the type and amount of waste present.

STORY 5: Georgia Democrats push for state laws protecting reproductive rights following Alabama court ruling

Georgia Democrats are urging Republicans to safeguard access to in vitro fertilization (IVF) and contraception in response to a recent Alabama Supreme Court ruling deeming fertilized eggs as children under state law. Sen. Elena Parent, the lead sponsor of the bill, emphasizes the need for certainty amid concerns that couples in Georgia may reconsider IVF due to legal uncertainty. Democrats call for legislative action to protect IVF and contraception, expressing concerns over potential legal implications similar to those seen in Alabama. However, Senate Majority Leader Steve Gooch dismisses the need for such legislation, citing the ruling's applicability only to Alabama. Despite Democratic efforts, Gooch opposes addressing the issue hastily in the Senate, raising questions about the timing and necessity of the proposed bill. Additionally, Democrats highlight the lack of congressional action to safeguard contraception access following a Supreme Court justice's opinion suggesting reconsideration of precedents like Roe v. Wade.

Break 3: INGLES 8

STORY 6: Georgia Power could face new law to disclose its cost of power generation on customer bills

Georgia Power customers are facing higher electricity rates and increased costs for nuclear expansion, prompting a push for transparency in billing. House Bill 1406, championed by Chairman Don Parsons, requires Georgia Power to disclose information about fuel costs on customer bills, aiming to enhance understanding of energy charges. This comes amid concerns over Georgia Power's business practices and recent rate hikes. While the company opposes the bill, arguing that much of the information is available online, proponents emphasize the need for clarity, particularly regarding fluctuating fuel costs. Critics accuse Georgia Power of prioritizing secrecy over customer interests, highlighting the importance of transparency in government-run monopolies. The bill's fate now rests with the House Rules Committee ahead of the legislative deadline.
