The Newton County Board of Education has named Dr. Duke Bradley III as the sole finalist for the superintendent position, which became vacant after Samantha Fuhrey's retirement in June. The board voted unanimously, and Georgia law requires a 14-day waiting period before finalizing the appointment. Bradley currently serves as the chief of staff for the Henry County School System and has extensive leadership experience in education. STORY 2: Madison hosts first two Town Halls to tap public's goals for future
Madison is conducting a series of Town Hall meetings, one for each of its five districts, as part of its Comprehensive Planning preparations. The first two meetings for District 4 and District 2 allowed citizens to discuss various issues and ask questions related to the city. Topics covered included economic development, zoning, traffic in downtown, affordable housing, attracting new businesses, park facilities, and grocery store options. The meetings are aimed at promoting small group discussions and active listening to gather public input for future city initiatives. Additional meetings are scheduled for the remaining districts, emphasizing citizen engagement and addressing community concerns.
STORY 3: Rep. Kendrick to hold town hall on bill to change Rockdale form of government
State Rep. Dar’shun Kendrick, Democrat from Lithonia, will host a virtual town hall on October 26, 2023, via Zoom. The event will include an overview of the 2023 legislative session, discussions on upcoming legislation and events, and a review of House Bill 741, which seeks to expand the Rockdale County Board of Commissioners from three to five members in a part-time capacity, along with the introduction of a county manager for day-to-day operations. The bill also addresses commissioner salaries and proposes the establishment of an independent Board of Ethics and a full-time ethics officer. Straw polls in November 2022 showed bipartisan interest in these changes.

Story 4: Rivian deal amended to extend $5 billion investment and job creation timeline by two years
Rivian, the electric vehicle (EV) startup, has been granted a two-year extension for its "performance period" in an economic development deal with the state of Georgia. The extension moves the deadline from December 31, 2028, to December 31, 2030, to fulfill a $5 billion investment and the creation of 7,500 permanent jobs for a massive EV plant. The extension is due to ongoing litigation that has caused delays in the project's original timeline. Rivian will make PILOT (Payments in Lieu of Taxes) payments of at least $300 million over 25 years, and the agreement includes strong clawback provisions to protect taxpayers. State and local governments are investing millions in the project, including infrastructure improvements and workforce training programs.
Story 5: Two Rockdale County deputies honored for life-saving use of Narcan
Deputies Nathaniel Peterson and Johnny Verdell of the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office have been honored by the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities for their quick response to a drug overdose, saving a man's life. They administered Narcan, a medication that reverses opioid overdoses, to the victim who had stopped breathing. Their actions led to the victim's recovery. Kevin Tanner, commissioner of the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities, presented them with the Commissioner's Champion Award, recognizing their lifesaving efforts and setting an example for other law enforcement officers in the state.
