STORY 1: Family Teams Up To Construct Outdoor Classroom At West Central
At West Central Elementary, an outdoor classroom project has become a family effort led by Aaron Lewis, a local Scout aiming for Eagle rank, and supported by his family. The project, inspired by the need for outdoor learning spaces, was funded by a $5,000 Georgia Outdoor Learning Demonstration grant, with additional donations from Home Depot and Lowe’s. The space, which repurposes picnic benches from a previous Eagle Scout project by Stephanie Lewis’s son, is set to be completed this month. It will offer students a new, nature-inspired learning environment, reflecting strong community involvement and family dedication.
STORY 2: State Senate Democrats Weigh in on Gun Safety
Georgia Senate Democrats are urging their Republican counterparts to pass gun safety legislation following a recent school shooting in Barrow County that left two teachers and two students dead. Senate Minority Leader Gloria Butler criticized Republicans for not addressing gun safety, highlighting that Georgia has not passed any new gun safety laws since 2018. The call for action follows similar demands from House Democrats and is fueled by high gun violence rates in the state. Proposed measures include firearm storage requirements, tax credits for safety devices, and a “red flag” law. Despite these proposals, no gun safety legislation has advanced through the General Assembly.
STORY 3: Family of Man Fatally Shot by Gordon County Deputy Files Federal Lawsuit
The family of Billy Dewayne Couch, who was fatally shot by Gordon County Sheriff's Deputy Aaron Carnes on January 24, 2024, has filed a federal lawsuit. The lawsuit alleges that Couch, who was unarmed and attempting to seek safety, was shot in the back by Carnes without any warning or medical aid. The family claims Carnes obstructed medical assistance as Couch bled to death. They also argue that Carnes, who had a history of excessive force, should not have been on duty. The suit names Carnes, Sheriff Mitch Ralston, and Gordon County, accusing them of failing to prevent Couch's death and seeking justice for the family. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent review of the incident.

STORY 4: FOOTBALL: Bulldogs Romp In Renewed Rivalry Against Pepperell
In a dominant 44-0 victory, the Cedartown Bulldogs defeated the Pepperell Dragons in their final non-region game. Cedartown's offense was effective, scoring on all but two possessions, with Tae Harris and Demarcus Gardner contributing key touchdowns. The Bulldogs' defense limited Pepperell to just 100 yards of offense and secured a safety. Despite the loss, Pepperell's new head coach Brandon Haywood praised his team’s resilience against tough early-season opponents. Cedartown moves to 4-0 and prepares for its Region 7-4A opener, while Pepperell, now 0-4, will regroup before starting its region schedule.
STORY 5: Rome and Floyd County Police To Investigate School Shooting Threats
Following a school shooting at Apalachee High School, a Pepperell High School student was arrested Tuesday, bringing the total to nine students from Rome and Floyd County arrested for making school threats. Arrests included students from various schools, with the first occurring at Rome High School on Friday. In response to the threats, local schools have heightened security measures and scheduled teacher planning days to provide a brief respite. School and law enforcement officials are collaborating to address the threats, stressing the seriousness of the situation to students, staff, and parents.
