Feds Say Austell Man Led International Arms Trafficking Scheme
Austell resident Dexter Wellington Roberts, III, along with four others, is accused of leading an illegal arms trafficking operation across North America. The scheme involved procuring large quantities of firearms in the southeastern U.S. and selling them in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Roberts, allegedly the mastermind, initiated the conspiracy in December 2022. Over the next few months, his accomplices purchased significant numbers of firearms. Law enforcement conducted multiple seizures, recovering over 120 weapons, with 47 seized from Roberts in Henry County, Georgia. The defendants face federal charges, including conspiracy to deal in firearms without a license. Roberts, arrested in the Bahamas in mid-October on another weapons charge, awaits federal custody. The investigation is led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, with support from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security.
