STORY 1: Fifth Newton Student Faces Charge after School Threat
In Newton County School System, a fifth student has been arrested for making threats against a school, students, or staff. A 13-year-old from Liberty Middle School was taken into custody after allegedly making threats on a school bus. This follows the arrest of a 12-year-old student for making electronic threats toward a school in Florida. Since early September, five students have been charged with terroristic threats, prompted by a school shooting at Apalachee High School in Barrow County. Sheriff Ezell Brown emphasized the seriousness of such threats, urging students and parents to understand the legal consequences. Superintendent Dr. Duke Bradley III stated that the school system collaborates with law enforcement to address threats and administer consequences, stressing that threatening behavior is prohibited and considered criminal.
STORY 2: Buckhead To Begin Work On Historic Town Hall
The renovation of Buckhead's Old Town Hall is set to start on Monday, September 23, with concerns about overgrown grass potentially hindering work. Nancy Brock from the Morgan County Landmarks Society emphasized the need for the grass to be trimmed to allow University of Georgia students access to the building's windows for the project. The building, a historic site built in 1910, is the town's only historic property and is included in the National Register of Historic Places. The renovation is supported by a $2,335 grant from the Morgan County Landmark Society, matched by the town. UGA students, under Professor Jim Smith, will lead the restoration of two windows as the project's first phase. Additionally, the town council accepted a $1,000 donation from Callidora Ranch for investment, planned for sidewalk repairs, scheduled a Christmas party for December 5, and set dates for cemetery cleanup.
STORY 3: Peachtree Academy FFA Student Meadow Joseph Brings Home Awards
Meadow Joseph, Peachtree Academy's first beef cattle exhibitor, made history with her impressive performance at the Gwinnett County Fair. She earned several top honors, including Grand Champion Angus Bull, Reserve Grand Champion Angus Bull, Grand Champion Angus Cow/Calf Pair, and Second Place Angus Heifer in its class. Additionally, Joseph excelled in the show ring, winning first place in Showmanship. Her dedication to her Angus herd and commitment to excellence have set a new benchmark for Peachtree Academy's FFA program, emphasizing the importance of agricultural education and hands-on learning for future success.

STORY 4: Morgan officials urge citizens to avoid paying tax bills via mail
Morgan County is experiencing postal service delays affecting property tax payments. Tax Commissioner Wendy Coe advises avoiding mail payments for upcoming property taxes due to these issues. Alternatives include using a secure drop-box on Hancock Street in Madison, paying in-person at the tax office, utilizing pay-by-phone, or making online payments. Despite mail disruptions, tax payments remain due by November 15, 2024, with penalties for late payments. Citizens can view bills online, and credit/debit card payments are accepted with fees. The tax office emphasizes the need to meet payment deadlines to avoid penalties.
STORY 5: Student Charged with Bringing Gun to School
A 13-year-old student at Cousins Middle School was arrested on September 17 for allegedly bringing a gun to school the previous day. The Newton County Sheriff's Office was alerted after the student showed the gun to others on the school bus. He has been charged with carrying a weapon in a school safety zone, a felony, and was handed over to the Juvenile Court System. The Sheriff's Office emphasized the importance of student and staff safety, urging parents to discuss the serious consequences of bringing weapons to school, making threats, or committing acts of violence, to prevent such incidents and avoid further arrests.
