STORY 1: Floyd County Commission set to hike some parks and recreating fees

The Floyd County Board of Commissioners is set to approve several fee increases for Parks and Recreation, including a $2 admission fee for youth basketball games to cover security and officiating costs. The fee will be charged per person, with children under 12 entering for free, and only credit cards will be accepted as payment. Other fee increases include raising prices for select concession items due to higher costs at Sam's Club, increasing fees for power and water for pavilion rentals, adding a refundable key deposit, raising nightly rates at campsites, increasing gymnastics fees, and adding two new gymnastics classes. Additionally, the commissioners will proclaim Georgia Highlands College Day and Constitution Week during their regular meeting. Constitution Week is celebrated from September 17th to September 23rd...........…….Get more info at northwestgeorgianews.com

STORY 2: 26-year-old Rome man dies in crash on Ga. 53 near Shannon

A fatal crash occurred just south of Shannon, Georgia, claiming the life of a 26-year-old Rome man, Jonathan Dunn. The incident involved a collision between Dunn's motorcycle and a Chevrolet Silverado at the intersection of Ga. 53 and Shannon Road around 7 p.m. A Georgia State Patrol trooper discovered the crash while off-duty and initiated CPR using an AED when he found Dunn unresponsive. Another trooper arrived to conduct the crash investigation, determining that the Silverado had failed to yield at a stop sign, crossing into the path of Dunn's motorcycle. Charges are pending the completion of the GSP Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team investigation.

STORY 3: Developers sue Gordon County over Miller Ferry industrial zoning denial

A zoning request for a large industrial project off Miller Ferry Road in Gordon County, Georgia, was denied, leading to a lawsuit filed by King Curtis LLC and Curtis Development Group LLC against the county. The lawsuit claims that the denial of the rezoning request from A-1 Agricultural to I-1 Light Industrial was a "continued enforcement of unconstitutional existing zoning." The plaintiffs seek a permanent injunction against the county's enforcement of the existing zoning and a requirement to rezone the property to a constitutional classification. The county denies these allegations and has answered the lawsuit, which will proceed through legal procedures. The zoning request had faced opposition from nearby residents concerned about the environment, traffic, and other issues, leading to its denial despite infrastructure and tax revenue promises from the developer. County officials also questioned the project's end user and firefighting capabilities.

STORY 5: Cedartown leaders get a look at the proposed Lankford Corner development concept

Cedartown city leaders were excited by the unveiling of concept art for a new event venue as part of the proposed Lankford Corner development. The development encompasses a 5,800-square-foot structure constructed mainly of wood and glass, serving as the anchor for the 1-acre property donated by Jim and Jean Lankford. The venue, facing South Main Street, will accommodate up to 400 people and feature brick and stone accents, a kitchen, office space, and accessible restrooms. The project, which includes streetscaping along West Ware Street and South Main Street, plans to break ground next year, following the award of a $750,000 Appalachian Regional Commission grant in 2022.

The event was well-received by attendees. The chamber regularly organizes various activities, including networking luncheons, business promotions, and events.
