STORY 1:   Floyd County Teachers Prepare For Students Return Thursday

On Tuesday, Floyd County schools prepared for the new school year with vibrant classroom decorations and final touches before the open house. Armuchee High School Principal Joseph Pethel expressed eagerness for students' return, highlighting their vital role in energizing the school. Teachers at Garden Lakes Elementary crafted unique, themed classrooms, with one third-grade room evoking a beach setting. This year, a new literacy curriculum featuring 10 themed segments will be introduced, and sixth graders will move to the Armuchee Middle and High School complex, a change welcomed by both teachers and students. Floyd County Schools start on Thursday, followed by Rome City Schools on Friday.

STORY 2: 110 CASA Volunteers Needed in Gordon and Bartow Counties

In Bartow and Gordon Counties, the demand for Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) volunteers exceeds supply, as there are more children in foster care than available CASA volunteers. Advocates for Children is addressing this need by offering free, 8-week training starting September 10 at NorthPointe Church in Adairsville. The training prepares volunteers to support and advocate for foster children by assessing their situations and making court recommendations. With over 10,000 children in Georgia facing abuse or neglect, CASA volunteers are crucial in providing stability and support. Volunteers must be over 21, undergo a background check, and complete a 40-hour training program. For more information or to register, visit advochild.org or contact Emily Ciavarro at Emily@advochild.org.

STORY 3: New NWGA Housing Authority Director Gets Down To Business

Justin Jones, the new Executive Director of the Northwest Georgia Housing Authority, is initiating a strategic plan to improve the organization's efficiency and effectiveness. His goal is to help public housing residents achieve self-sufficiency and eventually reduce the need for public housing. Jones plans to restructure the organization, develop a strategic plan, and rebuild public trust. He is also focused on addressing financial management issues, including filling the vacant CFO position. Jones emphasizes a commitment to higher standards than federal requirements and aims to engage with both the city and residents to foster better relationships. A history enthusiast and SEC fan, Jones is dedicated to making a lasting impact in the Rome community.

STORY 4: Northwest Georgia Gymnast Helps Secure Olympic Bronze Medal

Northwest Georgia's Brody Malone led the U.S. men's gymnastics team to a bronze medal at the Paris Games, ending a 16-year Olympic drought. After a disappointing qualifying round, Malone, who was recovering from a knee injury, delivered crucial performances on the pommel horse and high bar. His final routines, including a strong performance from teammate Stephen Nedoroscik, secured the bronze with a score of 257.793, just behind gold medalist Japan. Malone, the only Olympic veteran on the team, redeemed himself and celebrated the team's achievement with pride.

STORY 5:     Boars Head Expanding Deli Meat Recall to 71 More Products

Boar's Head is expanding its recall of deli and ready-to-eat meat products due to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The recall now covers about 7 million additional pounds of products under the Boar's Head and Old Country brands, produced between May 10 and July 29. This expansion follows a positive test for Listeria in a liverwurst sample during an outbreak investigation linked to deli meats. The outbreak has resulted in 34 illnesses, including 33 hospitalizations and 2 deaths. Consumers should discard affected products, clean their refrigerators, and retail delis should sanitize their facilities.
