Walton Davis Jr., a man who served as both mayor and a city council member for Canton, is remembered by his friends and family for his determination and enjoyment of life. Davis, a Canton resident for over 50 years, died May 10 at the age of 92 in his home. n 1989, During his time serving as mayor, he privatized the garbage service in Canton. In 1989 he appointed Canton’s first Black city council member, John Heard. Heard died April 18 at 78. In addition to serving Canton residents, Walton Davis Jr. also served for over 40 years on the Hospital Authority Board for R.T. Jones Memorial Hospital, which became Northside Hospital Cherokee. He was also involved with the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce and was active in local civic clubs such as Jaycees and Kiwanis Club, where he served as president.
