STORY 3: State Economist Says If Georgia Experiences Recession It Will Be Mild
Georgia's state economist, Robert Buschman, informed lawmakers that the state is likely to experience a mild recession this year, citing concerns about lingering inflation, the federal reserve's posture, rising labor costs, higher mortgage rates, and post-pandemic office vacancy rates. Buschman defended the governor's conservative revenue estimate and highlighted the need for caution. He indicated that the economic outlook in the budget estimates points to a mild recession in the first half of the year. State revenues, which surged during the pandemic, are showing signs of slowing. Gov. Brian Kemp has proposed a $36.1 billion spending plan for the upcoming budget year.
