STORY 1: fire

A fire on Covington's historic Square resulted in the destruction of four businesses, damaging several others and causing power outages. Firefighters worked for over 18 hours to contain the blaze and prevent reignition. The Covington Fire Department handed over the investigation into the fire's cause to the State Fire Marshal's Investigations Unit due to the downtown's historic significance and the extent of financial loss. The affected businesses, including Shelvie Jean Boutique, New Shoez, The Dude Store, and Shear Bliss Hair & Beauty, were housed in a historic building constructed in 1896. The firefighting efforts were complicated by modifications made to the building over the years, which impeded water access. Several neighboring fire departments and agencies provided mutual aid, assisting in controlling the fire. The community has rallied to support those affected by the fire with fundraisers being organized......……. Stay up to date on this developing story at rockdalenewtoncitizen.com.

Meanwhile, in Conyers, three incumbent members of the City Council have qualified for re-election: Gerald Hinesley (District 3), Valyncia Smith (District 4), and Connie Alsobrook (District 2). Challengers include Charlene "CeCe" Carr and Pamela Hicks for District 3 and District 4 respectively. In Covington, Kenneth Morgan, Fleeta Baggett, Felton Hudson, James Walden, and Eric Dazon Threets are running for mayor. The elections for both cities are scheduled for November 7.

Story 3 : paqc

Newton County District Attorney Randy McGinley has been appointed by Lt. Gov. Burt Jones to the investigative panel of the Prosecuting Attorneys Qualifications Commission (PAQC). Established by Senate Bill 92, the PAQC comprises eight members responsible for investigating alleged misconduct by district attorneys and solicitors-general in a manner similar to the Judicial Qualifications Commission for judges. The panel includes Judge Ott, the former Chief Judge of the Alcovy Circuit, and McGinley. Lt. Gov. Burt Jones highlighted the importance of holding prosecutors accountable for proper criminal prosecution and ethical behavior. McGinley expressed his gratitude for the appointment, having also been appointed by the governor to the State Child Fatality Review Panel........……….……

Story 4:  enroll

Conyers residents can enroll in Conyers University, a free six-week program aimed at educating citizens about local government and the community. The program will feature Monday evening sessions from September 25 to November 15, where participants will learn from city staff and officials about various topics and departments relevant to life in Conyers. Interactive activities are included in each session, except for the public safety session, and the program will conclude with graduation and recognition at a City Council meeting. Registration is open to residents of Conyers or Rockdale County, with a limit of 15 participants. The deadline to register is September 13.

Story 5: dove

The Georgia dove hunting season will begin on September 2, as announced by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources' Wildlife Resources Division (WRD). The season runs in different segments: September 2 to October 8, November 18 to 26, and December 19 to January 31. Shooting hours are from half an hour before sunrise to sunset for all dove seasons. The WRD encourages hunters to visit public dove fields and provides a dove field forecast to help hunters anticipate conditions. Hunters are urged to participate in the Dove Harvest Survey and to report banded doves as part of a conservation effort. A hunting license and a Georgia Migratory Bird License are required for hunters aged 16 and older.

STORY 6: idalia

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp has activated the State Operations Center in anticipation of the arrival of Tropical Storm Idalia, which is expected to make landfall in southeastern Georgia. The storm is projected to strengthen to a Category 3 hurricane before hitting Florida's Big Bend area and then weaken to a Category 1 hurricane as it moves into southeastern Georgia. Despite the expected weakening, Governor Kemp is taking precautions and working closely with emergency agencies to ensure preparedness. Tropical storm-force winds and heavy rainfall are anticipated to affect South Georgia, with hurricane-force wind gusts possible in certain areas. Georgians are advised to monitor weather updates and follow safety guidelines provided by GEMA/HS (Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency).
