Seven members of criminal street gangs have been sentenced to at least 10 years in prison in connection with a series of auto break-ins that occurred in Cherokee County, Georgia, in 2019. The defendants admitted to violating the Georgia Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act and the Georgia Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. The break-ins, which targeted around 50 vehicles in various neighborhoods, resulted in the theft of money, firearms, and other personal belongings. The group, comprising members from different gangs, worked together to obtain illegal funds. The defendants, including two juveniles, were arrested by law enforcement while attempting to commit additional crimes. Assistant District Attorney Kelly Chavis, who prosecuted the case, emphasized the evidence of collaboration among the gang members. The defendants entered negotiated guilty pleas and were sentenced individually. They will serve prison time, face restrictions on contact with victims and co-defendants, and be banned from Cherokee County and association with any criminal street gang members or associates.
