Georgia High School Association approves NIL for high school athletes
The Georgia High School Association (GHSA) board has unanimously approved a decision allowing high school athletes in Georgia to earn money through their name, image, and likeness (NIL), aligning them with their college counterparts. This follows legislation passed two years ago for college athletes. However, there are strict restrictions in place to maintain amateur status: no school logos, names, uniforms, mascots, or GHSA trademarks in NIL advertising, and no promotion of prohibited products like tobacco, alcohol, or controlled substances. Compensation must not be tied to athletic performance or enrollment incentives. Students must inform school officials of NIL agreements, and professional guidance is advised for financial and tax implications. Some college athletes have already capitalized on NIL opportunities, like Georgia Bulldogs' Brock Bowers.
