Georgia legislators, State Reps. Terry Cummings and Sharon Cooper, discussed House Bill 520, a comprehensive proposal to transform Georgia's behavioral healthcare system. The bill aims to enhance mental health research, funding, facilities, and personnel, emphasizing treatment over incarceration. The proposed legislation would offer incentives for students to enter the behavioral healthcare field and assist those already in the field with loan repayment. Panel members, including Kim Jones from NAMI, highlighted the need for systemic changes to address workforce challenges, equal access, coordination among agencies, and alternatives to incarceration for those with mental health issues. They emphasized that improving mental health treatment is a bipartisan public safety and health issue.
