Story 1: Georgia PSC Hears Eminent Domain Case
On August 6, a lawyer for Hancock County property owners urged the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) to overturn a hearing officer’s recommendation allowing Sandersville Railroad Co. to use eminent domain to acquire 43 acres for the Hanson Spur project. The project aims to transport granite, farm products, and timber but has faced criticism from property owners and legal representatives who argue it lacks sufficient public benefit and detail. Opponents, including the Institute for Justice and the Southern Poverty Law Center, claim the project fails to justify its public purpose and impacts historically significant properties. Proponents argue that the project supports public use through increased trade and economic benefits.
Story 2: Kemp recommits to tort reform
On August 7, Gov. Brian Kemp announced he will continue advocating for major tort reform in the 2025 legislative session. Speaking at the Georgia Chamber of Commerce's annual Congressional Luncheon, Kemp emphasized that while the 2024 session achieved a partial victory by limiting direct lawsuits against trucking companies' insurance carriers, significant reform remains a priority. He plans to hold a listening tour and roundtables with experts and industry leaders to shape his 2025 agenda. Kemp's push for reform aims to curb frivolous lawsuits and reduce insurance costs, a continuation of efforts dating back to a 2005 law that was later struck down by the state Supreme Court.
Story 3: Two World Premieres from KSU’s Dance Department
Kennesaw State University's Department of Dance recently concluded its July Eleo Pomare–Glen Conner Choreographic Residency. This summer, choreographers Christian Denice and Tristian Griffin created two original works with the KSU Dance Company. Denice’s piece, "Arena," explores internal conflict and external struggles through a wrestling-inspired narrative, while Griffin’s "Grow Today, Bloom Tomorrow" pays tribute to community and family sacrifices. The residency, now in its fourth year, aims to foster connections between students and professional artists. The resulting performance, "Double Exposure," will open the 2024-2025 season and is set for August 23-24 at the KSU Dance Theater. Tickets are available at KSUDance.com.

Story 4: New Rule Mandates Inquiry Before Certifying Election
On August 6, Georgia’s Republican-dominated State Election Board narrowly approved a rule change requiring county officials to conduct a “reasonable inquiry” before certifying election results, replacing the previous requirement to certify results by a set deadline. Proponents argue the change ensures accuracy and accountability, while critics fear it could lead to delays and disputes over election outcomes. Democrats and watchdog groups argue that the term “reasonable inquiry” is vague and could be misused to challenge results. The change, enacted just before November elections, has sparked controversy over its potential impact on the certification process.
Story 5: Harris, Walz debut White House ticket, vowing 'fight for future'
Vice President Kamala Harris and her new running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, made their debut together in Pennsylvania. Walz delivered a strong critique of Donald Trump, accusing him of undermining the economy, law and order, and fostering division. Walz emphasized his background in military service and teaching to connect with voters. Harris praised Walz as a unifying leader and highlighted his role in supporting her campaign. The pair's appearance in Philadelphia marked the beginning of a tour through key swing states ahead of the Democratic convention, aiming to boost their campaign's visibility and counter Republican attacks.

Story 6: Woodstock Native Emma Hunt Stumbles in Olympic Speed Climbing Quarterfinals
At the Paris Games, Poland's Aleksandra Miroslaw won the gold medal in women's speed climbing, marking her country's first gold in the sport's Olympic debut. Miroslaw, a world record-holder, completed the climb in 6.10 seconds, narrowly beating China's Deng Lijuan. Aleksandra Kalucka from Poland took the bronze. American Emma Hunt, a favorite for the gold, was unexpectedly eliminated in the quarterfinals after a slip. In men’s climbing, Japan’s Sorato Anraku topped the lead semi-finals, advancing to the combined boulder and lead finals. Tomoa Narasaki, a top contender, failed to qualify for the finals.
