Officers were dispatched in response to reports of firearm discharges and found the body of a man between the 1700 building of Pirkle Road and another building on Hampton Ridge Road. STORY 2: ESPN angers viewers by cutting off ending of Buford-Mill Creek for NBA preseason

During the recent high school football game between Mill Creek and Buford, which drew national attention, an ESPN broadcasting decision caused frustration among viewers. The game was intense, with Mill Creek leading 31-24 in the final seconds, and Buford on a potential game-tying drive. However, ESPN abruptly switched its broadcast to the start of an NBA preseason game between the Golden State Warriors and the Los Angeles Lakers, leaving viewers unable to witness the game's conclusion. Fans, both locally and nationwide, expressed their frustration on social media, with many criticizing ESPN for the decision. In response to the backlash, ESPN issued an apology and plans to re-air the game on ESPNU.

STORY 3: Gwinnett County Public Schools Saw Graduation Rate Decline This Year

Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) had a graduation rate of 81.9% in 2023, down from 83.2% in 2022, signaling a decline in on-time high school graduation. Five high schools reported their best graduation rates in the past five years, while 12 schools saw their rates increase. Nine schools achieved graduation rates exceeding 90%. Despite these positive results, the districtwide graduation rate remains below the statewide rate of 84.4%. GCPS officials attribute the decline to attendance issues, with rising chronic absenteeism leading to fewer students graduating on time. Superintendent Calvin Watts is actively working on initiatives to improve graduation rates, including communicating with students and families about expectations and providing necessary support.

STORY 5: Suniva to restart solar cell plant in Gwinnett County

Suniva, a U.S. solar cell manufacturer that filed for bankruptcy six years ago due to competition from cheap Asian solar panels, is restarting its manufacturing plant in Norcross, Georgia. The company secured a $110 million commitment from Orion Infrastructure Capital (OIC) to finance plant upgrades and expansion. The first phase will generate up to 240 jobs and increase manufacturing capacity to 1 gigawatt. This will support around 750,000 homes. The expansion will begin production by spring and include a second phase to reach 2.5 gigawatts. The move was made possible by new federal tax credits from the Inflation Reduction Act passed by Congress last year, signaling a boost for American solar manufacturing and job creation.
