Gwinnett County police have identified 18-year-old Andres David Buitrago Castillo as the victim of a shooting at an apartment complex in Norcross. The shooting occurred on Sunday night at the Elliot Norcross apartment complex. Police have not yet identified any suspects and have not released information on a possible motive. The investigation is ongoing, and detectives are actively pursuing leads. Anyone with information is urged to contact the police or Crime Stoppers to remain anonymous. STORY 2: bass pro

 

Gwinnett County police have identified McKinley Singletary, 43, as the man accused of stealing merchandise from Bass Pro Shops at Sugarloaf Mills on July 2. He has been charged with two counts of theft by shoplifting. During the incident, Singletary allegedly pushed the store manager out of his way to escape with $2,636 worth of stolen items. Police are still searching for the other suspect involved in the theft. Anyone with information on Singletary's whereabouts or the identity of the second suspect is urged to contact detectives or Atlanta Crime Stoppers. A cash reward is being offered for information leading to their arrest and indictment.

 

Story 3: transit

Gwinnett County has received a $20 million federal grant for its transit center redevelopment project, part of the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) program. The transit center will be expanded next to Gwinnett Place Mall, which is also being redeveloped as a mixed-use district. The grant will cover most of the $25 million project, with the county providing a $5 million local match. The new two-story transit center will offer improved amenities, including restrooms and customer service areas. Construction is expected to begin in 2025, with an opening date in 2027. Story 4: principals

 

The Gwinnett County Board of Education has approved new appointments for principals at two elementary schools. Melissa McClelland will be the new principal at Rock Springs Elementary School, and Leslie Hill will be the new principal at Trip Elementary School. Additionally, the board approved four other leadership appointments for central office positions. Melissa McClelland has 23 years of experience in education and has been an assistant principal at Woodward Mill Elementary School. Leslie Hill has 24 years of experience and previously served as an assistant principal at Mason Elementary School. The new principals will begin their roles for the 2023-2024 school year.

 

Story 5: back to school

 

Gwinnett County Sheriff Keybo Taylor is hosting the third annual Back-to-School Bash at the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds on Saturday. Families are invited to attend from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to receive free school supplies for the upcoming school year. The event, held in partnership with Live Healthy Gwinnett, will also offer free health screenings, giveaways for students and teachers, fun activities, and vendor booths. Teachers can receive supplies by showing their identification or proof of employment. Due to the large crowds in previous years, parents are advised to arrive early for the event.

North Gwinnett, Providence Christian, and Wesleyan were awarded the American Volleyball Coaches Association's Team Academic Award for the 2022-23 school year. The award honors their academic excellence, requiring a team GPA of 3.3 or higher on a 4.0 scale. Providence Christian's victory marks its seventh consecutive season receiving the AVCA Academic Award.
