Story 1. worker

A healthcare worker at a Woodstock diagnostics center, Bhavin Patel, has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a female patient during a sonogram procedure. The Cherokee Sheriff's Office investigated the incident after the victim reported it on July 31. Patel, a male sonographer from Canton, was charged with sexual assault by a hospital employee with a patient. Following evidence that supported the allegations, Patel turned himself in and was released on a $5,700 bond from the Cherokee Adult Detention Center. The incident occurred at Wellstar Cardiac Diagnostics in Woodstock.

STORY 2: moratorium

Cherokee County is ending a moratorium on development applications for the area near Sixes Road and Interstate 575, allowing new projects to proceed. The moratorium was initially imposed to facilitate coordinated planning between the county and local cities to ensure quality development and address traffic congestion concerns in the I-575 and Sixes Road Interchange Area. The Comprehensive Plan, which designates the area as a "Wild Cat" character zone, emphasizing major employment and mixed-use development, has been adopted. Plans for transportation improvements are underway through intergovernmental agreements with surrounding cities. Other approved actions include funding agreements, land purchases, and program allocations for community development and housing initiatives.

Story 3: hornet

The Georgia Department of Agriculture (GDA) has confirmed the detection of a living yellow-legged hornet in Georgia for the first time, marking the first instance of a live yellow-legged hornet detected in the open United States. The GDA, in collaboration with the USDA and the University of Georgia, is urging the public to report sightings of this non-native hornet species that could potentially threaten honey production, native pollinators, and the agricultural industry. A beekeeper in Savannah reported the sighting, and the identification was confirmed by the USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. The GDA is working on a plan to trap, track, and eradicate the yellow-legged hornet in Georgia.

A Girl Scout troop based in Waleska is constructing a self-serve food pantry for their community. The junior scouts from Troop 18292 are building the pantry, which will be located on the porch of Cline Store in Waleska. The pantry will be filled with non-perishable food items, snacks, and personal care products, providing a resource for those in need. The grand opening is scheduled for September 2nd. The project not only aims to help the community but also allows the junior scouts to work towards earning the Bronze Award, the highest honor for a junior scout. The troop has been inspired by similar self-serve food pantries in Canton.

Story 5: 100

The Sequoyah Regional Library System is inviting the public to celebrate the 100th birthday of the R.T. Jones Memorial Library in September. The celebration will include food, live music, and remarks from community leaders. The library has been an integral part of the Canton community and plans to mark its centenary with various events, including making birthday cards and an educational look into the history of Cherokee County. The library has evolved over the years, from its humble beginnings to becoming a vital community resource. The celebration reflects both its past and the next century of service.

Story 6: parent

The Cherokee County School District is accepting applications for its annual parent academy program called VILLA (Volunteer Instructional Leadership Learning Academy). This free six-session program offers parents the opportunity to learn more about the school district and how to be engaged with the schools. Participants learn about school board roles, district operations, visit schools, and engage in Q&A sessions with school board members and senior staff. The program aims to educate parents about school boards and district operations, filling in knowledge gaps. Sessions are held on Tuesdays in October, including a school visit, and conclude with a final session and graduation in November. Applications are due by September 5.
