STORY 1 tree

A Mableton man, Yancy McWeay, sustained serious injuries in a car accident. Around 5:30 a.m., his 2015 Chevrolet Impala left Nickajack Road and hit a tree after going through vegetation and a drainage ditch. The collision uprooted one tree and struck another, leaving the car in the eastbound lane of Nickajack Road. McWeay was taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital by Puckett Ambulance Service. The incident is under investigation, and anyone with information is asked to contact Cobb County Police Department at 770-499-3987.

Story 2: scorch

The sweltering August heat is set to persist throughout the week in Cobb County, with temperatures exceeding 90 degrees. Highs are anticipated to reach 95 degrees today, and 97 on Saturday. Heat advisories were in place for parts of Georgia, and over 100 million Americans were under various heat alerts. Residents are cautioned to stay hydrated, take precautions during outdoor activities, and provide shade and water for pets. MUST Ministries in Marietta has established a cooling center open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., offering relief and food to those seeking refuge from the heat. Please double check to be sure children or pets are not left unattended in vehicles. The extreme heat is expected to be with us thru this weekend.

Story 3: qualifying

Qualifications for municipal elections are underway in five of Cobb County's seven cities, including Acworth, Austell, Kennesaw, Powder Springs, and Smyrna. In Acworth, candidates such as veterinarian Toby Carmichael and Robert Lipham are running for Alderman Post 1, while Kimberly Haase and Steve Prather are contesting Alderman Post 2. In Austell, Mayor Ollie Clemons faces competition from Chris Djonis, while other City Council seats see a mix of incumbents and newcomers. Kennesaw's Mayor Derek Easterling is running for re-election unopposed, and City Council Posts 1 and 2 have multiple candidates. Smyrna has several incumbents seeking re-election, along with some newcomers. Powder Springs also features incumbents and new candidates vying for mayor and City Council seats..…..(pause)

STORY 4: 30m

During a Cobb County commission meeting, the divide over public transportation in the county became evident. The commission voted 3-2 to approve a three-year contract with Transdev to operate and maintain the CobbLinc bus system, costing about $30 million for one year. Commissioners Keli Gambrill and JoAnn Birrell opposed the contract. The contract drew scrutiny due to Transdev's recent acquisition of First Transit, the previous operator. The contract increase from the prior one was explained as being due to maintenance costs for the aging fleet and increased personnel costs. The transit tax referendum was also discussed, and while ridership has dropped, CobbLinc maintains busy bus routes.

STORY 5: seniors

The Senior Citizen Council of Cobb County celebrated National Senior Citizen Day by recognizing residents for their volunteer work. Awards were given to seniors who volunteered at food banks and senior centers. The event also marked the 50th anniversary of the council. With seniors being the fastest-growing age group in the U.S., the event highlighted their active participation in community matters and legislative advocacy. Chair of the Cobb Board of Commissioners, Lisa Cupid, expressed the importance of seniors' input on policy areas like housing and transportation. Awards were given to individuals for their contributions to various volunteer organizations and community services.

Story 6: walton

In their Region 5 7A opener, Walton's softball team secured a dominant 17-0 victory against Wheeler. Four players, namely Audrey Gurule, Keeva Tracey, Kensi Ody, and Julia Rutledge, contributed two RBIs each to the triumph. Julia Rutledge also achieved two hits during the game. The team's pitcher, Blakely Caldwell, performed well by allowing only one hit over four innings. With this win, the Raiders now hold an 8-3 record and are set to face North Cobb in their upcoming match.
