Story 1: Man arrested for shooting mother and son in driveway of their Lawrenceville area home
A 43-year-old man, Terrance Alonzo Washington, has been arrested for shooting a mother and son in the driveway of their Lawrenceville home. The incident, initially reported as a domestic dispute, occurred late Tuesday night. The victims, a 44-year-old mother and her 20-year-old son, were critically injured and taken to a hospital. Washington was apprehended in Warner Robbins. The motivation behind the shooting appears to be domestic-related, as Washington had a prior relationship with the female victim. Charges against him include aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during a felony, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and theft by taking. The investigation is ongoing, and police encourage anyone with information to contact them.
Story 2: Woodstock Man Charged With Shooting Firework at Helicopter
David Rance Jeter, a 66-year-old Woodstock man, has been charged with terroristic threats and acts for allegedly shooting a firework at a helicopter. The incident occurred on October 20, with Jeter reportedly using a firework mortar to target a helicopter occupied by two passengers. In a separate case, Jeter faces a disorderly conduct charge for shouting obscenities during an Indian wedding on August 21, 2022. According to authorities, he used a megaphone to make insulting noises, upsetting individuals of Asian descent. Jeter then blocked a lane, continuing to yell obscenities until officers intervened. He is currently in the Cherokee County jail without bond.
Story 3: Smartphones could use your voice to detect if you’re drunk
Researchers at Stanford Medicine and the University of Toronto have developed a smartphone app capable of determining a person's level of alcohol intoxication by analyzing changes in their voice. In a study, participants were given alcohol and assigned tongue twisters to read aloud, while their voices were recorded by a smartphone. By analyzing voice patterns with digital programs, researchers achieved 98% accuracy in predicting alcohol intoxication compared to breath alcohol results. The researchers believe the app could serve as a tool for timely interventions to prevent injuries and deaths resulting from accidents, particularly car crashes.

Story 4: Northwest Georgia Counties Eligible for Emergency Farm Drought Assistance
Following a prolonged period of extreme drought affecting Northwest Georgia, the USDA has declared a natural disaster in four counties: Catoosa, Chattooga, Dade, and Walker. These areas experienced eight or more weeks of severe, extreme, or exceptional drought conditions. Contiguous counties Floyd, Gordon, and Whitfield are also eligible for assistance. The declaration enables the USDA Farm Service Agency to extend emergency credit to affected farmers for various recovery needs, such as replacing equipment or livestock, reorganizing operations, or refinancing loans. Applications for USDA FSA loans can be submitted until June 20, 2024, with farmers encouraged to contact their local USDA Service Center for assistance.
Story 5: Man Gets Life for Stabbing Murder of Girl
An 18-year-old, Brayan Rivas, has been sentenced to life in prison, plus 20 years without parole, after pleading guilty to the murder of a female juvenile in Marietta in 2020. Rivas faced charges of malice murder and a violation of the street gang terrorism and prevention act. The motive is believed to be an attempted initiation into the MS-13 gang, as Rivas was found to have associations with the gang through phone, social media, and residence searches. The incident involved Rivas confronting the victims, chasing them, and fatally stabbing the girl in the woods behind an apartment complex. The prosecutor called it a heinous and senseless murder.

Story 6: State Tax Credit Review Panel Focuses on Housing
Witnesses testified at a legislative hearing in Columbus, Georgia, emphasizing the importance of low-income housing and historic rehabilitation tax credits for the financial and social well-being of residents. The Joint Tax Credit Review Panel, chaired by Sen. Chuck Hufstetler and Rep. Shaw Blackmon, is evaluating various tax incentives in the state. Advocates for low-income housing tax credits argued that the state's one-third match is crucial for financing affordable housing units. Historic preservation advocates highlighted the positive impact of tax credits on revitalizing communities, fostering downtown development in cities and towns across Georgia. The panel will make recommendations for potential changes to tax incentives in 2024.
Story 7: New pilot program aimed at helping prison inmates find jobs following release
The Georgia Department of Labor, in partnership with the state Department of Corrections, has introduced the "Walking the Last Mile Reentry Program" to assist incarcerated individuals in securing jobs as they transition back into society. The program will offer skills assessments, personalized skill development, resume building, mock interviews, and job placement support. Recidivism rates often stem from limited job opportunities for individuals released from prison. The pilot program, launching next month in downtown Atlanta, aims to break the cycle of incarceration by providing participants with the skills and resources needed for successful reentry into society. The program's effectiveness will be assessed based on key milestones, and its expansion will be guided by the results. Various business organizations, including the Georgia Association of Manufacturers and the Associated General Contractors of Georgia, are supporting the initiative.
