Story 1: Rosalynn Carter dies at age 96
Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, who was married to former President Jimmy Carter for 77 years, passed away at the age of 96 at their home in Plains. A prominent advocate for mental health, caregiving, and women’s rights, Mrs. Carter entered hospice care on Friday, and President Carter had joined the hospice program last February. The couple's children, including Jason Carter, the 2014 Democratic gubernatorial nominee, survive her. Tributes poured in, highlighting her impact on Georgia and the nation. Memorial details were pending, and the Carter family suggested contributions to the Carter Center’s Mental Health Program or the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregivers in lieu of flowers.
Story 2: Man wanted in kidnapping, shooting arrested outside Zaxby's
Deamos Glass, a man wanted by Madison Police for an October shooting, was arrested after a brief foot chase near Zaxby’s. Glass, 19, had allegedly shot a man on East Washington Street and fled the scene with a woman and a 2-month-old child. Recognized by Detective Andre Johnson, Glass fled when approached, leading to a brief chase. Officers later found his shoes and a .22 caliber revolver in the undergrowth. Glass faces charges of aggravated assault, kidnapping, and obstruction. The shooting victim was treated for a leg wound after being ambushed at a residence. Glass is in custody at the Morgan County Detention Center.
Story 3: Smyrna Man Gets 15 Years in Prison for Child Molestation
Eduardo Diaz, a Smyrna man, was sentenced to 15 years in prison and 15 years of probation for child molestation. Diaz, 38, pleaded guilty to child molestation and aggravated molestation and was sentenced by Cobb Superior Court Judge Angela Brown. The victim, an underage girl, disclosed the abuse during a family therapy session years later. Diaz admitted to Marietta Police Department detectives that he molested the girl between May 1, 2017, and Sept. 1, 2023, while her mother was away. Cobb District Attorney Flynn Broady emphasized the shared duty of guarding children and ensuring justice for victims of crimes against them.

Story 4: Used coffee ground may help prevent Alzheimer’s and Parinkson’s: study
Researchers from the University of Texas at El Paso discovered that spent coffee grounds, when treated, have properties that can protect brain cells from damage associated with neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. The study found that caffeic-acid-based Carbon Quantum Dots (CACQDs) derived from used coffee grounds can be neuroprotective, preventing free radicals from causing damage and stopping the build-up of amyloid protein fragments. The researchers aim to develop a treatment that addresses the atomic and molecular underpinnings of neurodegenerative disorders, potentially leading to a cost-effective and sustainable pill to prevent these conditions.
Story 5: Sports Betting Best Odds for Legalizing Gambling in Georgia
Despite years of unsuccessful attempts to legalize gambling in Georgia, the focus in 2024 seems to be on sports betting, which gained momentum during the recent legislative session. Former Chief Justice Harold Melton's opinion that sports betting could be legalized without changing the constitution gave it an advantage. While some lawmakers preferred a constitutional amendment, the Senate rejected both measures, delaying the decision until 2024. Lt. Gov. Burt Jones anticipates renewed efforts in the upcoming session, with sports betting as a favorable option. The Metro Atlanta Chamber supports the move, emphasizing potential tax revenue for education programs. The possibility of combining sports betting, casinos, and horse racing into a single constitutional amendment is also discussed, but proponents recognize the challenges. Despite obstacles, supporters believe legalized gambling, particularly sports betting, is inevitable in Georgia.

Story 7: Doug Collins to lead Georgia chapter of national think tank
Former U.S. Rep. Doug Collins will lead the new Georgia chapter of the America First Policy Institute, a national think tank with ties to former President Donald Trump. Collins, a Republican, served Georgia's 9th Congressional District from 2013 to 2021. The America First Policy Institute focuses on promoting policies that prioritize safety, opportunity, and freedom. Collins, known for his vocal support of Trump, brings his unique perspective as a lawyer, former congressman, and veteran to help the institute address the needs of Georgians. The organization aims to implement proven policies to address challenges such as crime, homelessness, and economic struggles.
