STORY 1: Man Who Abused Children for More than a Decade Gets Life Without Parole

Derrick Alan Crooms, 47, has pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including rape, incest, aggravated child molestation, aggravated sexual battery, child molestation, and enticing a child for indecent purposes. The crimes spanned over a decade and involved three minors, with some victims being younger than 5 when the offenses began. Crooms, who previously pleaded guilty to child molestation in 1996, has been sentenced to life without parole. The investigation was conducted by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Oconee County Sheriff’s Office, and Newton County Sheriff’s Office. The sentencing hearing included statements from victims and relatives, and the court imposed the maximum sentence for the protection of the victims and the community.

STORY 2: OCAF's Annual Holiday Market and Artists’ Shoppe opens this weekend

The Oconee Cultural Arts Foundation (OCAF) is hosting its 29th annual juried Holiday Market in downtown Watkinsville. The event, taking place on December 1 and 2, features a diverse array of original and handmade works by regional artists and crafters, including pottery, paintings, fiber art, stained and fused glass, jewelry, sculpture, photography, and woodwork. The market will be open on Friday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., with an admission fee of $5 per adult for two-day access (children under 16 are free). Additionally, the Artists' Shoppe will showcase OCAF members' creations from December 1 to December 22.

STORY 3: County approves $46 million SPLOST referendum question on ballot this March

Morgan County and its municipalities in Georgia are set to vote on renewing the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) in March, potentially generating over $46 million over six years. The funds would be divided among the county and cities based on population rates. Morgan County plans to allocate funds to public safety services, an agricultural complex, broadband expansion, non-public safety machinery, building renovations, and countywide infrastructure improvements. The City of Madison plans to invest in a new fire station, park renovations, vehicles, transportation development, greenspace acquisition, and public safety equipment. Other municipalities, including Rutledge, Bostwick, and Buckhead, also have plans for water and sewer improvements, recreational facilities, road improvements, and more. SPLOST is considered crucial in maintaining property taxes and sharing the financial burden with visitors.

STORY 4: Conyers Tables Vote on Group Home Request

The Conyers City Council delayed a decision on a zoning change request for a potential group home on Institute Street until December 6 to further study the matter. Pastor Corey Hambrick proposed using a house for a group home assisting young men without families, aiming to provide guidance and support. Hambrick seeks a text amendment to allow the group home in the Downtown Edge subarea, but concerns were raised about its location and the precedent it might set. While there's support for the initiative, council members worry about potential implications for the historic area and the possibility of multiple similar requests if the ordinance is altered. The council unanimously voted to postpone the decision for further evaluation.

STORY 5: Jack's Creek Farm celebrates 50 years in business

Jack’s Creek Farm in Bostwick is celebrating its 50th anniversary by continuing its tradition of providing holiday supplies and festivities. The family-operated business sells a variety of Christmas trees, including Fraser Fir, and offers a range of activities such as visits from Santa Claus, Tunnel of Lights Hayrides, Grandma’s Christmas Shoppe, and a free petting zoo. Owners Damon Malcom and Mark Batchelor, who took over the farm in 1995, focus on creating a family experience and have permanently protected 200 acres of land through conservation easements. The farm has sold 3,000 Christmas trees this season, marking its busiest year.
