STORY 1: shooting

The Newton County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting incident in western Newton County. Deputies responded to a residence on Lakeside Circle around 12:30 a.m. over the weekend, where they found a 30-year-old man with gunshot wounds to his leg and stomach. According to the victim's brother, two armed men wearing all black and masks knocked on the front door and then began shooting into the house. The victim was rushed to the hospital. Multiple shell casings were found near the front door of the house. Further details about the incident are currently undisclosed as the investigation continues.......……. STORY 2:  Crash

A fatal head-on collision occurred on Ga. Highway 36 on August 29, resulting in one fatality and at least three injuries, possibly involving alcohol. Dhanraj Deonarine, 42, of Covington, passed another vehicle in the northbound lane and collided with an oncoming car near Windridge Drive around 11 p.m., as reported by the Newton County Sheriff's Office. A witness stated that Deonarine's Dodge Charger was speeding at over 100 mph and passing vehicles recklessly on double yellow lines. Deonarine, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene. Inside his vehicle, officers found three unopened bottles of Corona beer and one empty bottle. Three occupants of the oncoming Ford F-150, including two children, were injured and transported to a local hospital.

Story 3 : Fund

A Small Business Resiliency Fund has been set up to help businesses affected by a destructive fire in downtown Covington on August 25. The Newton County Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with Discover Covington GA, is coordinating this fund to receive donations for the impacted businesses. Individuals who wish to contribute can visit online or can be sent by mail to the Newton Chamber of Commerce at 2100 Washington St. SW, Covington, GA 30014. Story 4:  Public Service commish

Georgia Public Service Commissioner Tim Echols, along with Commissioner Jason Shaw, has initiated a glass recycling contest in partnership with schools across Georgia. The contest, aimed at Student Councils, offers cash prizes, including a $2,500 cash prize for the winner. The contest, running until October 31, seeks to address the issue of excess glass occupying landfill space. All collected glass will be delivered to Arglass in Valdosta, where it will be recycled into new glass onsite. Georgia Natural Gas will sponsor an awards ceremony at Zoo Atlanta in November to honor the top schools. Echols hopes the schools will continue glass recycling efforts beyond the contest.

Story 5: GA Piedmont College

Georgia Piedmont Technical College celebrated the groundbreaking of its future Regional Transportation Training Center (RTTC) in Stonecrest on August 30, 2023. The multi-million-dollar project received significant funding from federal, state, and local entities, including $7 million from the state of Georgia, $4 million from DeKalb County, $1 million from the federal Community Project Funding program through Congressman Hank Johnson, and $500,000 from the city of Stonecrest. Private organizations like Amazon and Radius Recycling also made contributions. The RTTC will be the largest training facility of its kind in the region, focusing on transportation training, civil engineering, logistics, and diesel programs, accommodating between 600-800 students each term. The facility is expected to be completed by the fall of 2024 and aims to boost workforce development and regional economic growth.

STORY 6: Nelson Heights

The Newton County Board of Commissioners terminated its lease with Nelson Heights Community Services (NHCS) at a special meeting. The lease, effective immediately, pertained to the Nelson Heights Community Center, constructed by the county in 2009 but leased to NHCS for no cost. The termination was due to NHCS's failure to provide a clean financial audit and a violation of the lease, as NHCS sublet the property to a nonprofit organization operating a private school without prior written consent from the county. Commissioner J.C. Henderson, whose family was involved with NHCS, requested the lease cancellation, though he had no official authority. The board reviewed the lease issues despite Henderson's request.
