STORY 1: City council ok red light camera
The Marietta City Council has approved the installation of a new red light camera at the intersection of Cobb Parkway and South Marietta Parkway, adding to the four existing cameras in the city. The next step involves applying for approval from the Georgia Department of Transportation, which may take six to eight mon ths. Subsequently, the city will collaborate with a contractor for the camera installation, with the entire process expected to take at least a year. Despite a 2020 study suggesting limited safety improvements from red light cameras, the city claims that accidents have decreased at camera-equipped intersections. STORY 2: Cobb Fire pulls man from burning home
Cobb County firefighters successfully rescued a man from a house fire in unincorporated Marietta. The fire, believed to have been caused by an electrical issue, began in a bedroom, trapping the victim. Despite his attempts to escape by breaking a bathroom window, he was unsuccessful. Neighbors alerted firefighters who arrived swiftly, with Engine 10 using a ladder to rescue the man through the window. Engine 30 extinguished the fire, and Squad 7 assisted in the rescue. The victim was transported to the hospital, appearing alert and responsive. The entire operation, from rescue to fire extinguishment, took approximately 20 minutes.
STORY 3: Residents shaky on transit tax details at first town hall
Cobb County Commissioner Jerica Richardson discussed residents' concerns about the upcoming 2024 transit tax referendum, which involves a proposed 1% sales tax to fund transportation projects, potentially generating $2.8 billion (10-year plan) or $10.9 billion (30-year plan). Residents expressed worries about the tax's impact and density increase due to mass transit. A panel, including transportation officials, addressed questions and concerns at a forum. While some attendees felt their questions went unanswered, Richardson emphasized the need to provide clear information about the M-SPLOST program's impact on the county...................…..(pause)

STORY 4: East Cobb residents attend free concert
Approximately 50 people gathered at East Cobb Park for a performance by Rusted Melody, an American folk band from the Appalachian Mountains of North Georgia. Sponsored by Wellstar Health System, the event featured attendees setting up lawn chairs beneath trees or umbrellas as they enjoyed original songs and pop covers by the band. The relaxed atmosphere allowed families to enjoy the music, with some grilling for a birthday party and children playing nearby. Free concerts in the park have become a popular and enjoyable community event, with attendees looking forward to upcoming shows.
STORY 5: Garden clubs educate children on spiders
Around 150 children and parents gathered at the Fair Oaks Marietta Educational Garden Center for a spider-focused educational event. Andy West and Mitchell Embry of ProCare Pest Services led a seminar on arachnids, teaching kids about their ecological roles, potential dangers, hunting methods, and daily routines. Inside the historic Fair Oaks home, attendees enjoyed a PowerPoint presentation about spiders, while outdoor activities included face painting, cornhole, and snacks. West emphasized that out of Georgia's 38 spider species, only the brown recluse and black widow are truly dangerous. After the presentation, children had the opportunity to observe live spiders in jars, fostering an appreciation for these creatures.

STORY 6: Local car show raises funds for developing recovery organization
Phoenix Recovery Community Organization, a South Cobb-based group focused on addiction and mental illness recovery, hosted its 2nd Annual Car Show to raise funds and promote awareness. The event featured peer-to-peer counseling services and connections to detoxification, therapy, legal aid, and other resources for those in need. With the goal of expanding its community presence, the organization aims to secure a physical location to provide a safe space for individuals in recovery. The car show offered awards to exceptional vehicles and featured food trucks, vendors, raffles, silent auctions, and a variety of winners in different car categories
STORY 7: Man shot another man at coin laundry at Pat Mell and Austell roads
A shooting occurred at the 24/7 Coin Laundry on Pat Mell Road, involving a 51-year-old man who sustained multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was transported to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital for treatment. Police arrested the suspected shooter, Chike Obi, aged 33, without incident, although charges have not been filed yet. The investigation is ongoing, and detectives from the Crimes Against Persons unit are looking into the case. Police are urging anyone with additional information to contact them at 770-499-3945......………….…Back with final thoughts after this.
