STORY 1: Marietta Man Killed Crossing South Marietta Parkway

In Marietta, a man, William Gould, 57, was fatally struck and killed by a 2014 Nissan Altima while crossing South Marietta Parkway outside of a marked crosswalk around 10:15 p.m. The incident occurred at the intersection with Wylie Road. The driver, traveling eastbound, stayed at the scene and cooperated with authorities. Marietta Police Department's Officer Chuck McPhilamy stated that no charges are anticipated. Gould succumbed to his injuries on-site. An investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is urged to contact Investigator C. Roper at 770-794-5357.

STORY 2: 'Revolutionary Approach': Local Nonprofit Launches Food Choice Pantry

In December, Marietta-based nonprofit the Center for Family Resources introduced The Family Cupboard, a choice pantry addressing food insecurity for Cobb families. Unlike traditional food pantries, it allows families to freely select their preferred items, offering a more realistic shopping experience. The pantry, with three aisles of shelf-stable items and fresh produce, emphasizes healthy choices and efficient budgeting. Volunteers accompany visitors, providing nutritional guidance and discussing goal progress. The Food Security Program aids families with a minor child in Cobb, allowing weekly visits and promoting goal-setting. The pantry, open by appointment, aims to enhance lives by empowering families to make their own food choices.

STORY 3: Deane Bonner named MDJ Cobb County Citizen of the Year

The Marietta Daily Journal honored Deane Bonner, Cobb County NAACP president emerita, with the Citizen of the Year Award during the Cobb Chamber of Commerce's annual dinner. Bonner, known as "the moral conscience of the community," received a standing ovation as she accepted the award. She played a pivotal role in civil rights activism, leading the Cobb NAACP for 20 years and initiating various community-based programs. STORY 4: Cobb Tourism: Hotel/Motel Taxes Trending Up

Cobb County's tourism is on an upward trend, as reported during Cobb Travel and Tourism's recent board meeting. Sporting events, a significant contributor, have rebounded to pre-COVID levels, attracting over 851,000 visitors and generating $189 million in economic impact in the past year. Hotel-motel tax collections in Cobb County are also rising, showing a 7.12% increase in the fiscal year so far. Monthly tax collections, while fluctuating, overall indicate positive trends, with 2023 standing out as an exceptional year for tourism. Cobb Travel and Tourism sees these figures as a testament to the county's diverse attractions and robust tourism economy.

STORY 5: Mike Plant Brings Sports Success to Cobb Chamber Chairmanship

Mike Plant, head of development for the Atlanta Braves and the new chair of the Cobb Chamber of Commerce, has been honored at the chamber's annual dinner. Plant, known for his success in both the business and political aspects of sports, highlighted the chamber's neutral stance on a proposed 30-year transit tax in Cobb County. He emphasized educating the public about the tax and its implications rather than taking a position. Plant's extensive career includes his role in bringing the Braves to Cobb County in 2017 and his involvement in the success of Truist Park and The Battery Atlanta.

STORY 6: Cobb Off the Hook for More Than $7M in Barrett Reliever Costs

Cobb County's contribution to the South Barrett Reliever project is decreasing significantly due to increased funding from the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT). The county, initially expected to cover over $11 million of the $38 million project, will now pay about $5.6 million for the third phase, including the construction of a 450-foot bridge over I-75. GDOT will contribute an additional $7.4 million in construction costs, bringing the state's total contributions to approximately $32 million. The project, led by the Town Center Community Improvement District, aims to reduce traffic on Barrett Parkway by around 20%. The final phase is expected to conclude by the end of the year. Additionally, the commission approved around $280,000 to consultancy Kimley Horn for the third phase of a countywide surveillance and communication network, aiming to improve traffic flows and reduce delays.

STORY 7: UGA Extension announces 2024 Georgia Farmer of the Year

Bruce Redmond, owner of Shiloh Farms in Effingham County, Georgia, has been named the 2024 Georgia Farmer of the Year. Redmond took over Shiloh Farms in 2018, expanding its operations to 2,800 acres of rented and owned farmland, cultivating peanuts and cotton. The farm, a major producer of certified Tifton 9 bahia grass seed, has become the Southeast's largest producer. Redmond has been recognized for his dedication to conservation farming practices, incorporating sustainability, minimizing environmental impact, and increasing efficiency. He actively supports his community and has received various awards, including the 2022 Georgia Outstanding Young Farmer.
