Story 1: Missing Brookhaven woman's body found in Gwinnett County
The body of a missing 48-year-old woman from Brookhaven, Aimee Lafakis, was found in Dacula, Gwinnett County. The Brookhaven Police Department reported her missing, and Gwinnett County Police located her body near Turkey Crossing and Harbins Circle. Brandon Wineinger, her boyfriend, was arrested by Brookhaven Police on charges of false statements, tampering with evidence, kidnapping, and burglary. He has also been charged with concealing another's death. The investigation is ongoing, and the cause of death is still under investigation, with the possibility of additional charges. STORY 2: Gwinnett police looking for man wanted in home-sharing site robbery
Gwinnett County Police are searching for an armed robbery suspect, Khalil Hamilton, who used a home-sharing site to rent a room in Buford. On September 26, Hamilton requested help with a bathroom repair, then brandished a handgun and taser, demanding the victim to lie down, zip-tying his arms, and stealing his wallet and watch before fleeing in an older-model Honda with Texas license plate SSF5628. Hamilton has active warrants for armed robbery, aggravated assault, false imprisonment, and possession of a firearm during a felony. Anyone with information should contact GCPD detectives or Crime Stoppers for a potential cash reward. Hamilton is considered armed and dangerous.
STORY 3: Lawrenceville's Quinn House has helped men recover from addiction for more than 30 years
The Quinn House in Lawrenceville has been aiding individuals in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction for over 30 years, offering a 40-day residency program with an 80% success rate. Rickie Smokes, now the executive director and CEO, was a beneficiary of the program himself. The nonprofit also runs a thrift store and food pantry, distributing over 1.2 million pounds of food in the last fiscal year and providing various community services like Easter baskets, back-to-school supplies, and Christmas gifts. The thrift store generates revenue to support Quinn House, and a community church is housed inside. The organization's mission is to help those in need on their spiritual and recovery journeys. STORY 4: Steve Hassenger remembered for impact on Gwinnett wrestling
Steve Hassenger, a wrestling coach with a 32-year career, has passed away at the age of 69. Hassenger coached in both Michigan and Georgia, making significant contributions to wrestling and education. He coached at Shiloh High School and North Gwinnett, producing state champions, and fostering a strong wrestling community. His influence extended beyond the mat, as he developed a sports medicine curriculum adopted by Gwinnett County Public Schools and contributed to educational excellence. Hassenger's legacy is marked by his dedication to coaching, mentorship, and his impact on the lives of many. Memorial contributions can be directed to Olivet College Athletics.
STORY 5: SPORTS
In recent softball action, Hebron Christian's Gwen Hill starred in a thrilling 8-4 victory over Hart County in Region 8-AAA fastpitch softball. Hill's remarkable performance included her 300th career strikeout and a home run. Meanwhile, North Gwinnett triumphed 3-1 over Collins Hill in a non-region game, with Victoria Na striking out 12 and driving in a crucial run. Additionally, Wesleyan secured a dominant 15-0 win against West Hall, highlighted by Macey Cintron's stellar pitching and a powerful offensive display. Wesleyan boasts a strong 19-4 overall record and 13-1 in the region. On Senior Night, Mountain View's Bella Teems pitched a no-hitter in a 10-0 victory over Dacula, with Jahnnie Patterson setting a school record for stolen bases and multiple players contributing to the win. The Bears hold a 16-7-1 overall record and a 9-3 region record.
