STORY 1:  Newton County Amends Temporary Structure Ordinance

The Newton County Board of Commissioners has updated its zoning ordinance regarding temporary structures during home construction. As of August 6, permits for temporary buildings are now limited to six months, down from one year, and are only allowed on properties over 2 acres and outside subdivisions. Extensions must be approved by the Planning Commission, not administratively. The new rules address issues highlighted by Stone Lea residents, including long-term RV placements and sanitation concerns. The amendments aim to prevent prolonged use of temporary structures and ensure cleanliness and compliance.

STORY 2:     The Retirement Of A 4-H Agent

Janet Woodard, who has been a beloved University of Georgia Extension Agent in Morgan County for 30 years, is retiring. Her final days at the Ag Extension office were marked by heartfelt farewells and celebrations from the community. Janet’s career has been dedicated to 4-H and youth development, mentoring countless children in skills ranging from livestock shows to STEM projects. Despite a demanding schedule and personal challenges, she has made a profound impact on many lives, fostering confidence and independence. Her departure is bittersweet, as her legacy of leadership and dedication continues to inspire those she has touched, including current 4-H agents and former students.

STORY 3:  Conyers to Adopt Rollback Millage Rate

The Conyers City Council plans to reduce the millage rate from 13.33 to 11.97 mills for 2024, marking the sixth reduction in the past eight years, with three of those being full rollbacks. This reduction aims to offset increased property values, which could still result in higher taxes for some residents. Mayor Vince Evans noted that the rollback is intended to ease the tax burden amidst rising living costs. The City Council will finalize the millage rate at a meeting on August 15 at City Hall.

STORY 4:  EG Kight Returns to Rutledge to Perform A Free Concert This Friday

The Rutledge Summer Concert Series continues with renowned musician EG Kight performing at the City Park gazebo on Friday, August 16, at 7 p.m. Kight, a fan favorite for the past six years, is celebrated for her "country flavored southern fried blues" and captivating live performances. This year’s concert series, which runs through August, has been a hit with great crowds and community support. The free concerts, held every Friday evening, are presented by Coldwell Banker Lake Oconee/Lake Country and managed by Music Matters Entertainment. Attendees can enjoy music, food from Harvest & Honey, and bring blankets or chairs for a family-friendly evening.

STORY 5:   Madison Approves 'Luxury RV Park' On Sovis Road

The Madison City Council has approved a rezoning plan to develop a “Luxury RV Park” on 35 acres at the end of Sovis Road, near Love’s Truck Stop. The site, previously zoned for industrial use, will be transformed into a Planned Commercial District to accommodate 110-120 high-end RV sites with amenities like sewer, water, electrical hookups, high-speed internet, and a bathhouse. Security measures will include cameras, a license plate reader, and on-site management. The park will only accept RVs under 10 years old and will not permit permanent residency. Developer Brooks Pennington is also donating $20,000 for the Madison Greenway trail and granting an easement for its development. Despite the council’s unanimous approval, Councilman Eric Joyce questioned the "luxury" aspect of the park, likening it to a “luxury trailer park.” Pennington expects the park to attract short-term visitors and benefit the local community.
