STORY 1:  Newton County faces second rezoning lawsuit

In Newton County Superior Court, two lawsuits have been filed to challenge the county’s refusal to rezone properties for multi-use developments. The second lawsuit, by Sockwell Corners LLC and developers Integral Enterprises LLC and Ed Hutter, seeks to overturn the denial of a rezoning request for 158 acres at Ga. Highway 142 and U.S. Highway 278. The plaintiffs want the land rezoned from Agricultural Residential (AR) to Community Oriented Residential Development - Planned Residential Commercial (CORD-PRC) to allow for a higher-density project. The proposed development includes 294 single-family homes, 146 townhomes, mixed-use buildings, and commercial space. The plaintiffs argue that the current zoning renders the property unfeasible for development and contradicts the county's Comprehensive Plan, which supports higher-density projects. Another lawsuit by J.H. Morgan Farms and Inline Communities LLC also seeks to overturn a similar rezoning denial for a 93.79-acre parcel on U.S. Highway 278.

STORY 2:     Construction begins on Madison Business Center

A new commercial development, the Madison Business Center, has begun vertical construction in Madison on a 12.97-acre site near I-20 and Highway 441. Atlanta Investment Properties is developing three industrial buildings totaling 114,400 square feet, with the first, a 36,500-square-foot structure, expected to be completed by December 2024. The center will offer space for businesses ranging from 12,000 to 40,000 square feet, with options for leasing or purchasing. Features include clear span buildings, 22-foot ceiling heights, heavy landscaping, 24/7 security, EV charging stations, and infrastructure for commercial trucks. STORY 3:  K-9 Officer Bolt is officially retired

Newton County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Officer Bolt has officially retired following the resignation of his handler, Deputy Ezekiel Walker, who joined Henry County Police. Initially, Bolt was set to transfer to Henry PD, but they no longer needed additional K-9 officers. Instead, Bolt will be adopted by the Walker family for a $10 fee, with an anonymous donor covering his vet bills. The Newton County Sheriff's Office expressed gratitude for the support and wished Bolt a happy retirement.

STORY 5:   Motion to dismiss filed in Lindsey, Banes case

A motion to dismiss three money laundering counts has been filed in U.S. District Court by suspended Newton County Board Chairman Marcello Banes and commissioner-elect Stephanie Lindsey. The charges are linked to a land transaction involving 40 acres transferred by the Joint Development Authority to Technology Park Atlanta and later sold to a hotel developer. The motion argues that the JDA had no legal interest in the property and that Lindsey's real estate firm followed standard brokerage practices, including a commission payment shared with Banes. The motion also disputes allegations of misleading the developer and money laundering related to funds used for Banes's home construction. A pretrial conference is scheduled for September 12.
