Story 1: Newton County murder suspect captured in Decatur

Corey Olando Jackson, wanted in connection with the murder of Natasha Billings in Newton County, was captured by the U.S. Marshals Service in Decatur. The 41-year-old faces charges of murder and aggravated assault. Authorities arrested him at a Decatur residence with the assistance of the Newton County Sheriff’s Office and the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office. Jackson is accused of killing 37-year-old Natasha Billings at her home on October 30. Billings' body was discovered after her mother requested a welfare check. Jackson has been booked into the Newton County Detention Center. Authorities extended condolences to the Billings family and thanked collaborating agencies.

Story 2: Rosalynn Carter Memorial Service Draws All Five Living First Ladies

A memorial service at Emory University paid tribute to former first lady Rosalynn Carter, attended by President Joe Biden, former President Bill Clinton, and the current and former living first ladies. The service highlighted Carter's contributions to causes like mental health, caregiving, and disease eradication. Despite entering hospice care in February, Jimmy Carter attended the service. Son Chip Carter credited her with saving his life by convincing him to seek treatment for addiction. Journalist Judy Woodruff emphasized Carter's role as a close advisor to the president. Mrs. Carter, who died on Nov. 19 at 96, will be laid to rest in Plains, Georgia.

Story 3: Republican-Drawn Legislative Maps Come Under Fire

Georgia's special redistricting session started with criticism from legislative Democrats and watchdog groups over Republican-backed proposed maps for the state House and Senate, claiming they are unfair to Black voters. While both maps comply with a federal court ruling that the GOP-drawn maps two years ago violated the Voting Rights Act, Democrats argue that the proposed maps make unnecessary changes beyond the identified districts. Democrats released an alternative map focusing on the 10 districts identified by the court order. The session, continuing through the week of Dec. 4-8, aims to redraw legislative and congressional maps.

Story 4: Calhoun National Guard Unit Activated for Deployment

Around 200 soldiers from the Calhoun-based 1st Squadron, 108th Cavalry Regiment of the Georgia Army National Guard are preparing for an overseas deployment to Kosovo early next year. The soldiers will undergo pre-deployment training and administrative actions, with an initial phase at Fort Stewart in Georgia. A sendoff ceremony is scheduled for January 2, 2023, in Calhoun. The unit will be part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Kosovo Force (KFOR) on a peacekeeping mission, supporting the KFOR mission amid ongoing tensions between Serbia and Kosovo. The deployment is expected to last around eight months.

Story 5: Texas Man Sentenced To Prison For Threatening Georgia Officials After 2020 Elections

Chad Christopher Stark, a Texas man, has been sentenced to two years in federal prison for posting online threats against several Georgia public officials following the 2020 election. Stark pleaded guilty to sending a threat using a telecommunications device. The message, posted on Craigslist, urged violence against specific officials and threatened a volunteer county election worker. Stark's actions were deemed dangerous for personal safety and democracy. The investigation was part of the Justice Department's Election Threats Task Force, focusing on protecting election officials from threats and intimidation. Attorney General Merrick Garland emphasized the severity of illegal threats against those administering elections.

Story 6: Lawmakers call for more investment in public fishing areas

A legislative study committee in Georgia recommended increased state investment in public fishing areas to deter trespassing on private property. This recommendation follows legislation passed in March, guaranteeing Georgians the right to fish in navigable portions of rivers and streams. The study committee addressed concerns about property owners' rights and trespassing issues related to fishing. To clarify what constitutes a navigable river or stream, the committee recommended determining the navigability of each water body in Georgia. The proposal also suggests higher penalties for trespassing to discourage illegal fishing while maintaining the core principles of the original legislation. The report now goes to the full state House of Representatives for consideration in the 2024 legislative session.

Story 7: Over a third of young adults had anxiety or depression during pandemic

A study by Northwestern University found that people aged over 40 experienced lower levels of anxiety and depression during the pandemic compared to their younger counterparts. Over one-third of young adults reported high stress levels during the pandemic. Anxiety and depression rates were significantly higher among adults aged 18 to 39, with 40% experiencing anxiety and 33% depression, compared to those over 40, where 31% had anxiety and 24% had depression. Economic precarity and responses to social upheaval may have contributed to the poorer mental well-being of young adults. The study emphasizes the need for mental health care and economic policies targeting the needs of young adults.
